Role is virtual but travel to the Valley Forge headquarters at least once per quarter is required. Incumbent must be able to work EST hours.

JOB SUMMARY:

Working in conjunction and in collaboration with Senior Director of Technical Accounting and External Reporting, this role leads planning, coordinating, researching and summarizing of highly complex and specialized technical accounting research and provide accounting support to UGI business units. Act as a key Subject Matter Expert (“SME”) on all aspects surrounding complex and specialized accounting areas with a principal focus on consolidation and variable interest entities (“VIEs”), equity method investments, business combinations, derivative accounting in connection with the Company’s various new initiatives, particularly on the Company’s renewable and other projects, working in close collaboration primarily with the UGI Energy Services and UGI International business units. Position requires maintaining consistently high level of practical knowledge in U.S. GAAP complex accounting areas including impact of such GAAP on UGI and subsidiaries as well as effective communication to document conclusions in a clear and concise manner. This position also plays an integral role in developing and maintaining UGI’s corporate-wide accounting policies on specific complex accounting topics. The Senior Manager – Technical Accounting also supports the accounting and related reporting and disclosure in connection with the Company’s external reporting, including SEC periodic reports. Significant interface with external auditors to manage the audits and reviews of periodic SEC periodic reports and other special projects and to provide support for financial statement assertions and to support the Corporate Financial Reporting Internal Control environment audit both internally and with external auditors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • -Acting as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on complex and specialized accounting topics;
  • -Researching, advising and documenting technical accounting and reporting matters (GAAP and SEC), including coordinating conclusions and research with external auditors with a primarily focus on consolidation rules and accounting and reporting for equity method investments;
  • -Reviewing contracts to identify technical accounting matters for the Company’s business initiatives, including consolidation, identification of VIEs, revenue recognition, leases, etc.;
  • -Participating in merger and acquisition activities, including due diligence, purchase price allocation and third party valuation;
  • -Developing strong cross-functional profession relationships to serve as an effective business partner during the negotiation of transactions to ensure compliance with GAAP and UGI’s corporate accounting policies;
  • -Monitoring emerging accounting literature and prepares technical accounting memo for senior management;
  • -Leading in the preparation and the presentation of educational materials to worldwide accounting and finance functions as necessary and applicable;
  • -Working with domestic and international accountants to provide technical accounting support for unusual or complex transactions;
  • -Assisting in development and monitoring of specialized accounting topics within UGI’s accounting policies; and
  • -Assisting in the preparation and review of the Company’s financial statements process, including Forms 10-Q/Ks.

Business Unit Accounting Transaction Support

Work directly with domestic and international accountants to provide technical accounting support for unusual or complex transactions with a principal focus on consolidation, equity method investments, derivatives & hedging, primarily for UGI Energy Services and UGI International business units. Lead technical accounting research on the Company’s new initiatives such as renewable projects and identify accounting and financial reporting issues in advance. Review contracts to identify accounting and financial reporting matters in merger and acquisition activities. Act as a key liaison with the external auditors on such complex accounting topics.

Support External Reporting Team and Audit Process

Provide assistance during the reporting periods, to the external reporting team with respect to review of the financial statements and preparation/review of the working papers supporting the Company’s quarterly and annual financial statements provided to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or other external stakeholders.

Corporate Accounting Policies Development

Assist in developing, monitoring and updating UGI’s Corporate-wide accounting policies as it relates to complex and specialized accounting areas and disseminate them to appropriate stakeholders.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required 
  • Minimum 7 years accounting experience; Big 4 experience preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of current SEC reporting rules and regulations and U.S. GAAP accounting rules.
  • Significant experience in technical accounting research on complex accounting topics, including, but not limited to, consolidation, equity method investments, derivatives & hedging. Ability to communicate effectively and summarize complex accounting topics to non-accounting personnel
  • Thorough knowledge of SEC reporting rules and regulations and GAAP accounting rules.
  • Knowledge and practical use of spreadsheet software packages, primarily Excel and Word.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to perform research on accounting and finance issues.
  • Ability to organize and drive projects to completion.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other functional groups across all organization.
  • Self-starter. Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately.
  • Perform analyses of accounting research tools. Ability to perform detailed research of SEC and GAAP accounting and reporting issues.
  • Ability to apply good judgment with respect to application of accounting rules and regulations to the Company's financial reporting.
  • Ability to stay current on reporting issues, work independently and under tight deadlines, and organize facts and authoritative literature to persuade others.
