Compensation:
Pay Range: $17.00- $27.65 /hour

Shift Available:

UAB Medicine supports work/life balance. The shifts available for this unit are:
  • Full time AM: Monday-Friday (8:00am-4:30pm); includes weekends and holidays
  • Part time AM (10:00am-6:30pm); includes weekend and holidays

Job Description:

To receive, process, calculate, prepare, barcode labels, and deliver/discard complex infant formula, human milk (mother’s and donor milk), and research study feedings for the patients of the WIC Neonatal ICU in accordance with the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) Best Practice for Expressing, Storing, and Handling Human Milk in Hospitals, Homes, and Child Care Settings guidelines and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Infant and Pediatric Feedings: Guidelines for Preparation of Human Milk and Formula in Health Care Facilities . To perform nutrition risk screening and other duties to assist the clinical dietitian in providing optimum nutrition care for adult patients in the acute care and ICU setting.

1. Receives, processes, and prepares complex infant formula, human milk, and combination feedings for the patients of the WIC Neonatal ICUs.

2. Adheres to and maintains high levels of sanitation and supply organization in the special feedings labs and designated storeroom, including shipping and receiving records, inventory logs, and temperature logs.

3. Routinely checks feedings lab equipment for proper operations and reports problems to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.

4. Performs nutrition risk screens and conducts calorie count studies for adult patients, once a minimum of 6 months of infant feeding specialist duties and approval from supervisor are achieved.

5. Calculates and maintains infant formula formulations, human milk formulations, and/or research formulations and recipes.

6. Screens and rescreens adult patients for nutrition risk by obtaining accurate and thorough diet and Page 2 of 3 nutrition histories; refers high-risk patients to registered dietitian nutritionists for further assessment.

7. Conducts calorie count studies and monitors the efficacy of nutrition intervention.

8. Adheres to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines, protects PHI (Protected Health Information) and complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, and maintains timely and accurate sanitation records, temperature logs, and product order shipment records.

9. Assists the clinical dietitian in implementing nutrition care plans and monitors the effects of nutrition intervention on the adult patient’s nutrition status.

10. Assists in the training and educating of patients, caregivers, dietetic interns, students, and other healthcare personnel as relates to food and nutrition services.

11. Participates in quality improvement activities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university. Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or science based focus preferred.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations: Certified as completed the Food Handler Training Course by the Jefferson County Department of Health within twenty-one (21) days from date of employment required.
