**Job Profile** **Summary**

?This role focuses on activities related to the support services functions, such as dietary and food services, environmental services, general facilities, repair and maintenance, parking, sterilization and transportation to ensure all required support activities are completed in a timely manner and meet the organization's quality standards and expectations. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following General Facilities, Repair & Maintenance duties: Operates, monitors and maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and replaces facilities mechanical components and systems such as electrical equipment, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and plumbing. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. An entry level role that applies broad theoretical job knowledge typically obtained through advanced education. May require the following proficiency: work is closely supervised, problems faced are not typically difficult or complex, and explains facts, policies and practices related to job area.

**Job Overview**

This position performs various duties relating to medical and hazardous waste management. Assists with the direction of staff with collection and transportation of chemical waste, medical waste and pharmaceutical waste from various departments and laboratories to designated storage areas according to procedures. Oversee the internal response to infectious, cytotoxic and chemical spills for clean-up. Signs manifests for chemical and infectious waste pick-ups and coordinates paperwork according to established guidelines.

**Job Description**

**Minimum Qualifications** **:**

1. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Management, Chemistry, Biology or related sciences.

2. Appropriate Environmental Health and Safety certifications.

3. Three (3) years of related experience including two (2) years directly involved with waste activities and/or environmental safety compliance efforts.

**Preferred Qualifications** **:**

1. Master's degree in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Management, Chemistry, Biology or related sciences.

**Duties and Responsibilities** **:** The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Responsible for Hazardous Waste Management/Safety.

2. Inspects hazardous waste storage areas for proper labeling, segregation, and storage requirements according to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Conducts pickups of material as necessary to assist staff.

3. Helps train department staff in hazardous waste management, safe laboratory practices, proper disposal of chemicals and bio-medical waste, and respiratory protection.

4. Remains abreast of changes in regulation of all agencies having jurisdiction over the medical center such as: EPA, OSHA, Mass DEP, MWRA, DOT, Boston Fire Department, FAA, and CDC.

5. Assists with investigating all indoor air quality issues.

6. Participates in all emergency responses and is a member of the hazardous materials response team. Responds to chemical spills and assists in clean-up activities.

7. Meets hazardous waste transporters, coordinates packing of hazardous waste, and assists employees of disposal firm contracted to pack and transport hazardous waste.

8. Inspects hazardous waste manifest and, if correct, signs and coordinates required paperwork according to established procedures. Notifies appropriate leadership of any and all problems encountered.

9. Ensures supply areas are neat and organized and maintains established par levels of inventory supplies. Notifies main office when reordering is necessary. Picks up and delivers supplies to designated areas.

10. Assists with other responsibilities of the department, including but not limited to fit testing, waste water treatment systems, policy development and implementation, and related Joint Commission requirements.

11. May be required to take Wastewater Treatment Operator class and pass the exam to be qualified to monitor wastewater pretreatment systems.

12. Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.

**Physical Requirements:**

1. Physical ability to stand, walk and bend the majority of the shift.

2. Physical ability to lift medium weight (50 lbs.) on occasion and push 200 lbs on wheels on occasion.

3. Ability to pass physical exam to wear an air purifying respirator.

4. Regular exposure to dust, heat, slippery surfaces, and unpleasant odors.

5. Regular use of protective attire works with medical waste including body parts and laboratory waste, blood, and hazardous chemical waste.

6. Occasional possibility of cuts, bruises, sprains, punctures or accidental contact with various hazardous waste, which could cause serious injury and/or death if safety protocols are not followed.

7. Contact with physician, nurses, laboratory staff, services staff, vendors, state and federal inspectors, patients, and the general public.

**Skills & Abilities:**

1. Interpersonal skills needed for the coordination of procedures in various departments.

2. Working knowledge of state and federal regulations for management of hazardous chemical and medical waste.

3. Working knowledge of OSHA requirements relating to personal exposure of regulated substances and general safe work practices including protective equipment.
