Job Description

This position assists in the day to day operations of the Clinical Laboratory Support Area of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This role assists the manager and supervisor of Clinical Lab Support with scheduling, inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy services, adult and pediatric phlebotomy, referral testing and the central receiving area.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Central Receiving and Phlebotomy Services
  • May prepare and adjust schedule for all employees of Clinical Lab Support to ensure proper coverage on all shifts with consideration of supervisor/manager approved vacations, holidays and contingencies
  • Assists in the development and implantation of the training program for all new Clinical Laboratory Support employees, and interns when needed
  • Performs all duties of a laboratory technician/phlebotomist or senior laboratory technician/phlebotomist in the Clinical Laboratory Support Area
  • Has the ability to perform all tasks in all Lab Support Areas
  • Resolves problems within the Clinical Lab Support Area
  • Performs troubleshooting in the Clinical Lab Support Area
  • Assists the Manager and/ or Supervisor with training and annual competency testing
  • Assists the Manager and/or Supervisor with implementation and monitoring of Quality Improvement projects
  • May be involved in special projects
  • Referral Testing Services
  • Completes appropriate routing, handling, and processing of various medical specimens by: properly verifying samples to lab requisitions using positive patient identification.
  • Verifying that the correct sample(s) were received for the tests that were ordered.
  • Assists physicians requesting specialized testing
  • Resolves any specimen discrepancies that present
  • Advise ordering doctors of any tests delays
  • Maintains all CAP/CLIA certificates for all reference testing laboratories

Customer Service

  • Responsible for implementing, training and providing coverage and proper solutions to any customer service issues including documentation and reporting
  • Understands and works to improve the dynamics of customer support in conjunction with the goals and mission of the department and hospital
  • Establishes and maintains customer service standards to ensure all customers are provided with prompt and complete service
Qualifications


JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Great interpersonal skills and the ability to interface effectively with both department and clinical staff
  • Must have the ability to work without direct supervision; make independent judgments and multi-task
  • Ability to maintain confidential medical information
  • If applicable: Complete DOT certification for shipping and handling every 2 years

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Associates Degree in science equivalent with basic knowledge of laboratory medicine preferred but not required. Medical Technology degree preferred but not required.
  • ASCP or NCA Certification preferred

EXPERIENCE:

  • One to two years experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
