ABOUT

Formed in 1928-29 as the first professional symphony orchestra in the Southwest, the TSO is the longest continuously performing professional arts organization in Arizona. The mission of the organization is to build and enrich community through the experience of live music of the highest quality. It serves more than 120,000 lives each year, including 30,000 students, through concerts, educational programming and outreach.

Under the artistic leadership of Music Director José Luis Gomez since 2016, the TSO’s vision is to reflect its many communities and bring them together through music, creating deeper connections with the region’s heritage and making music for all Tucson and southern Arizona.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Director of Institutional Giving joins a dynamic fundraising team at an exciting time, with access to positive team members and opportunity to grow. This position is responsible for prospecting, planning, writing and delivering compelling funding proposals and reports to corporations, foundations and government entities (“institutional funders”). Responsibilities include maintaining and growing an annual calendar of funding opportunities and deadlines; managing relationships; meeting with institutional program officers whenever possible; coordinating strategy; drafting, editing and submitting written grant applications and sponsorship appeals; and preparing and submitting reports to institutional funders. Other writing assignments may include content for newsletters, annual reports, and development materials.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a portfolio and develop strategies to increase annual support from Corporations, Foundations and Government funders, including identification and cultivation of new institutional prospects.
  • Maintain the calendar/timeline for annual proposals, sponsorships, and reports.
  • Be an active steward of institutional relationships.
  • Prepare all written grant proposals, reports and sponsorship requests including relevant collateral materials.
  • Manage the annual corporate table sponsorship effort for TSO’s signature fundraising event, PRIMO.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Philanthropy and Chief Marketing Officer to develop strategies for the identification, cultivation, engagement and stewardship of civic leaders—including at the appropriate time, the development and management of a Business Circle.
  • Identify programs for community involvement and generate outreach to strengthen mutually beneficial relationships with businesses and organizations, locally and regionally.
  • Involve and support key board and community solicitors as appropriate.
  • Manage and maintain a comprehensive database of community and government affairs contacts.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships and communications with elected officials and staff at all levels of government, with the goal of increasing support for the symphony’s operating and capital budgets.
  • Leverage and provide constituents (board, musicians, staff, patrons) with tools and messaging for them to advocate to their elected officials on the TSO’s behalf.
  • Maintain a calendar of corporate, community and civic events, and with the VP of Philanthropy attend networking events on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain comprehensive tracking reports on proposals submitted and funds received from institutional funders.
  • File detailed records of research and call reports on activity with institutional prospects and donors.
  • Coordinate fulfillment of institutional sponsorship benefits, including timely interdepartmental communications.

Other duties

  • Attend events and concerts as assigned.
  • Participate in TSO meetings and TSO committees as needed.
  • Other professional tasks as assigned by the VP of Philanthropy.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
  • 3-5 years direct experience and demonstrated success raising funds from Corporate, Foundation and Government sectors.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to articulate a compelling case for the artistic, civic, economic and educational value of the arts.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Experience using a database is desirable.
  • Creativity, optimism, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Results and team-oriented work style that inspires trust and confidence.
  • Commitment to outstanding customer service.
  • Passion for the arts is essential, with prior experience working in the arts a plus.

Essential Functions:

o Able to lift up to 25 lbs.

o Available to work nights and weekends for concert duty as needed.

o Available to travel to performances throughout Pima County as needed.

o Maintain an active driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

Compensation: $50,000 to $55,000 annually commensurate with experience
