Tucker Pup's Pet Resort is Hiring a Dog Handler Near Chicago, IL

  • Tucker Pup's Pet Resort is one of the largest and nicest dog businesses in Chicago. We have a 10,000 square foot facility in the West Loop, and offer dog daycare, boarding, grooming, training, and retail. Our facility includes indoor play rooms, plus the nicest outdoor play area in Chicago.

IMPORTANT SCHEDULE RELATED NOTICE:

We are currently ONLY seeking candidates that can work the following schedule:

  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 10:30 am - 7:30 pm w/ Friday and Saturday off.

**For all dog handlers hired, a training schedule of Tuesday - Saturday 10:30 am - 7:30 pm is required for a period of two weeks prior to beginning one of the two options listed above.

IMPORTANT ALLERGY RELATED NOTICE:

  • Potential candidates need to be aware that all staff members have significant exposure to peanut butter. It should be noted that Tucker Pup's cannot reasonably accommodate isolating an employee from peanut butter exposure.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee our playfloors, along with other dog handlers, where dogs are playing in large groups. This involves walking around the room, encouraging dogs to socialize, and separating dogs to avoid potential incidents
  • Interact with customers about how their dog is doing in play
  • Be able to comfortably handle all aspects of boarding operations, including feeding, medicine, laundry, and taking out certain dogs one-on-one
  • Move dogs around the facility
  • Help keep the facility clean. We use professional cleaning equipment

This is a physical job. Physical requirements include:

  • Be on your feet for multiple hours throughout the day, including lots of walking
  • Be able to lift dogs of at least 50 pounds in and out of a boarding suite
  • Walk dogs on leash throughout hallways at various times of the day
  • Walk up and down stairs, including with dogs on leash
  • Be willing and able to quickly separate dogs in off-leash group play

The most qualified candidates will have the following characteristics:

  • First and foremost, you must have a passion for dogs. It's what we're all about.
  • Professional experience in handling dogs (this doesn't just mean that you had a dog while growing up or that you simply "like dogs"). Relevant experience includes dog daycare handler, veterinary assistant, trainer's assistant, dog walker, and so forth.
  • Positive handling techniques only - any abusive behavior is met with immediate termination
  • Professionalism (both in communicating and in personal appearance).
  • You must have a positive attitude and work well with other people.
  • Will adhere to our dress code, which is standard for most retail businesses and is explained in our application on our website
  • Responsible, reliable, and prompt. Consistently being late and/or calling off is not an option.

Other important information:

  • We are open 365 days per year. If a holiday falls on your schedule, you would be expected to work on that day.
  • Compensation: $17.05 per hour initially, opportunity for regular raises w/ satisfactory performance.
  • Optional health benefits and 401k for full time employees
