Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is an active member of the team in the Operating Room. The CST functions under the direct supervision of the OR nurse. He/she is responsible for the sterile field, instrumentation, sterile technique, and other tasks required during the procedure. . The Surgical Technologist supports hospital mission, values and visions. Cares for Neonate/Infant (0-12 months)

Pediatrics (1–17 years) Adults (18 – 79 years) Elderly (80 years).

The tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Provides a safe environment for patient, visitor and employees through identifying/correcting/reporting health and safety hazards.
  • Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares sterile instrument table.
  • Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  • Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients.
  • Transports patients to and from surgical suite.
  • Positions patient according to type of surgery.
  • Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures which may include passing instruments, sponges and sutures.
  • Maintains work area.
  • Gathers equipment for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Assists in the monitoring of the patient through the procedure.
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
  • Orients and mentors new staff members.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Tech Program or equivalent training.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required and maintained.
  • Surgical technologist students may be hired prior to graduation (within 3 months of graduation). Upon graduation, verification of completion of requirements will be verified. Failure to complete graduation requirements can result in termination of the position.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to sustain concentration over long periods of time.
  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 25 pounds
  • BLS certification
  • New employees have up to 90 days from date of hire to obtain BLS for healthcare providers.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

Demonstrates the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Assessment Forms. Meets mutually agreed upon performance goals/objectives established as listed on the Performance Management Plan.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Exposed to temperature variances related to patient and/or equipment needs, lighting ranging from dark to bright, hazardous materials, radiation and lasers. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illness). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May perform emergency care. Occasionally subject to irregular hours. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. Interdisciplinary contact with other health care disciplines/professionals. Flexible in meeting the needs of the unit, (i.e. change in assignments or work schedule).

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The Surgical Technologist must be able to function efficiently under rapidly changing conditions. Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking; frequently lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients; frequently moves supplies and equipment requiring moderate physical effort lift/carry/push/pull up to 25lbs. Manual dexterity and mobility needed for frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and/or crouching. Occasionally removes or replaces supplies or equipment weighing up to 15lbs. from locations at or above shoulder level.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Will be required to take call on weekdays, weekends and holidays. Work hours may fluctuate to accommodate the operating room schedule. During low census/patient procedures the Surgical Technologist may be required to leave early or rotate days off or help in other units that are short staffed to perform basic nursing functions.

REPORTS TO:

RN Circulator, Clinical Coordinators, Surgical Services Manager and Director of Surgical Services

  • BLS certification
  • New employees have up to 90 days from date of hire to obtain BLS for healthcare providers.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Vocational School Graduate
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST)
