Job Description
Position: Maintenance Supervisor Date: April, 2023

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Salary Grade: 7 [Pay Range: $21.00 - $31.00 / $40.00-with all certifications]
Primary Responsibilities: Under general supervision, independently perform gasoline and/or diesel engine overhaul, repair, and service, on commercial vehicles and equipment in a diversified fleet.
Percent Time Spent Essential Functions
30%
1. Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspection on vehicles/equipment, according to the maintenance schedule timeframe for all vehicles and equipment.
2. Evaluate, analyze and test automotive systems to determine nature and extent of defect.
3. Estimate and/or document time and labor hours necessary to complete repair or replacement of defective parts.
4. Replace, repair and overhaul electrical equipment, compressed air equipment, cooling equipment, hydraulic equipment, heavy-duty transmissions, gas and diesel engines, drive and steering axles, suspension systems.
5. Perform emergency field repair, in all types of weather, including pickup and delivery to the job site.
6. Perform general maintenance on equipment/vehicles, as well as the garage building, bus wash, gas tanks, equipment and grounds when necessary.

1. Inspect and identify concerns and issues, and repair malfunctioning vehicles/equipment.
2. Identify needed repair parts, and fabricate parts as necessary.
3. Complete required departmental reports on a timely basis and take the initiative to address new situations.

1. Maintain accurate record of time and materials along with the amount of service provided on each job.
2. Maintain work area; maintain tools and equipment in safe, clean and usable condition.

1. Train and orient new hires in Maintenance according to department procedures and policies.
2. Serve as a model of professional behavior for the rest of the department to follow.
Secondary Functions:
1. May perform more difficult repairs, assist staff in performing duties or when on emergency road calls.
2. In absence of the Manager, will oversee the other employees and insure that the work is proceeding on schedule and deadlines are met.
3. Perform other related duties as required.
4. Orient and train new mechanic employees.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge:
1. Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
2. Able to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs.
3. Able to adhere to safety practices and procedures.
4. Possess working knowledge of mechanical design and fabrication.
5. Possess working knowledge of electrical systems, including computerized induction/ignition systems.
Skills:
1. Use of power and hand tools.
2. Use of diagnostic equipment, including acetylene and electric arc welding.
3. Operation of vehicles and equipment for diagnostic purposes.
Ability:
1. Able to diagnose problems and make repairs in the field on a 24-hour basis.
2. Prepare and maintain records and reports.
3. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
Education/Training/Experience:
1. High school graduate;
2. Graduate from an accredited college or trade school, and possess at least six (6) years mechanical experience/training in electronic, diesel, air brakes, and cooling systems;
3. Within the last ten (10) years, possess at least two (2) year’s work experience as a Fleet Mechanic – 2nd Class.
Licenses:
1. Possess a valid State of Hawaii CDL B license, plus passenger endorsement.
2. ASE certifications (H4 and H8). Must begin work on obtaining ASE certifications for H5, H6, and H7 within a year from date of hire.
3. Must obtain MCI certifications for the same categories within a year, from date of hire.
Working Conditions:
Working Hours
1. Up to 40 hours per week. Work varying shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime, with prior management approval.
2. Regular attendance at the workplace is required.
Working Environment
1. Mechanical repair work is performed both inside and outside.
2. Intermittent exposure to outside elements, noise, dust, fumes, vehicle exhaust, vibration, solvents, grease, oils, fuel, other chemicals used in an automotive/heavy equipment maintenance facility.
3. Mechanical, electrical hazards; atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin; may be required to wear respirator for some duties.
4. May occasionally need to perform work in confined spaces or under limited lighting conditions.
Equipment Used
Able to operate and use a variety of general and special purpose hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, air tools, measurement devices, electrical and other testing equipment; hoist and lift equipment; welding equipment; chemicals; safety equipment and clothing; telephone or cellular phone, two-way radio or a combination of both; written manuals; maps and schematics; computer and laptop computer and digital camera.
Physical Demands
1. Required physical flexibility in order to frequently access limited space areas.
2. Extensive use of hands, fingers, legs, and arms in grasping objects, driving equipment and using hand and power tools involved in maintenance and repair functions.
3. Use hoists, jacks, and related mechanical equipment to lift and align heavy parts such as engines, motors, tires, springs, and related equipment used in repair and operational tasks.
4. Must meet standard physical requirements and pass company sponsored medical examination, CDL, and drug/alcohol tests.
5. Constant – standing, walking, vision, hearing, eye-hand-foot coordination;
6. Frequent – pushing, pulling/lifting/carrying less than 25 pounds to more than 50 pounds, sitting, stair climbing;
7. Occasional – lifting/carrying 25 to more than 50 pounds, running, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, climbing, forward reaching, twisting, side bending, overhead reach, grasping, handling, finger dexterity.
Mental Demands
1. Demonstrated competency and proficiency in diagnostics pertaining to repairs/replacements on power trains and accessories, suspension systems and electrical/electronic systems.
2. Able to use information and subject matter knowledge related to data and information obtained through observation, interpretation, visualization and practical experience.
3. Able to learn technical information concerning failure/symptom and repair procedure outlined in the computer software, manuals, schematics and general experience.
4. Be able to explain equipment repair techniques by explanation, demonstration and supervised practice.
5. Requires the attention to detail, and the ability to analyze situations.
6. Able to comprehend service manuals and keep abreast of technical changes.
7. Must diagnose problems and make decisions on the best method to do repairs.

1.
