Equipment Mechanic

Open until filled 

Minimum Hiring Salary: $47,851

 General Statement of Duties

The Town of Wake Forest seeks an energetic and team oriented individual for the position of Equipment Mechanic. An employee in this class serves as a skilled mechanic in our fleet services repair facility. The employee performs diagnostic, mechanical repair and scheduled maintenance on gasoline, hybrid and diesel vehicles and equipment to include police vehicles, light and heavy construction equipment as well as light, medium and heavy-duty trucks. In order to support the work activities the position requires knowledge and technical ability in the operation of various diagnostic test equipment and software, pneumatic and hand tools, wiring schematics and repair manuals. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Equipment Services Superintendent. Educational Requirement: Normal work schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:00am- 3:30pm.

Essential Duties  

  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a variety of cars, light and heavy construction equipment, trucks, hybrid vehicles and related equipment.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, hydraulic systems, differentials, and front and rear axle assemblies.
  • Installs and maintains GPS equipment.
  • Maintains and updates the MSDS book.
  • Programs “smart” sirens on police cars.
  • Designs and implements innovative ways to wire police cars.
  • Sets flashing patterns for police lighting modules.
  • Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, and other hand tools.
  • Relines, replaces and checks brakes; realigns wheels and makes corrections using wheel alignment devices; turns brake rotors and drums.
  • Changes and balances tires.
  • Lubricates, repairs, and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts.
  • Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, installing lights, and replacingwiring.
  • Upfits various types of specialized equipment such as GPS, police equipment, lighting, etc.
  • Writes work orders with time and billed parts for electric vehicle data.
  • Designs and fabricates a variety of welding work including repair and fabrication on equipment and implements.
  • Maintains computer records and data; prepares reports as needed; makes sure vehicles are inspected and maintained.
  • Coordinates repairs with outside garages.
  • Diagnosis and repairs computer systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Orders parts and supplies and picks up from the vendor.
  • Cleans and arranges tools and garage area.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and up to 20 pounds frequently. Must possess the visual acuity to do extensive reading, use measurement device, operate a motor vehicle and perform building inspection task.

Minimum and Preferred Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by coursework in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills and considerable related experience in repairing automotive, construction and specialized equipment.
  • Preference given to candidates who have completed technical school and electronics training.
  • A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required within six months of hire. Preference given to candidates with a valid Class A or B Commercial license or permit.

  • Completion of the substance abuse testing required by the Town. Be advised that you have 48 hours after accepting our conditional offer to report for the drug screen.
  • Completion of a Background Screening.
  • COVID-19 vaccination by the first day of work (we will accommodate those who cannot receive the vaccine for disability or religious based reasons). You must have at least one dose before your first day of work. If you are subject to getting a second dose it must be received in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. Vaccination cards are to only be shared with Human Resources staff.
