The Town of Essex will be hiring students in the fields of environmental science, civil and/or environmental engineering going into their sophomore, junior, or senior year to work as student interns for the Town of Essex Public Works Department. A work list can be found here describing the duties expected of a student intern. A significant portion of the work is repetitive data collection in the field but there may be opportunities for work on projects involving individual analysis and use of their engineering skills to solve problems.
The position would begin at the end of the spring semester and last until the start of school in the fall. The salary would be approximately $18.50 per hour; no other benefits are provided, and the employee would have to provide their own transportation. All mileage accumulated during work hours on a personal vehicle will be reimbursed at the current federal rate. The normal work hours are 7:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. with a half-hour for lunch. All employees are expected to work a 40-hour workweek.
The student would have an opportunity to work in a small public works office with experienced personnel who have extensive experience as project engineers and managers through local consulting firms and municipal and state government. Everyone works well together; it is a great environment in which to learn more about what the public sector side of the civil engineering/water quality profession has to offer.
In order to be considered for the position, the applicant must provide the following:
