Town of Essex is Hiring a Police Officer Near Essex, VT

The Essex Police Department is looking for motivated, honest and enthusiastic individuals looking to make a difference in the Essex Community. The Essex Police Department serves an approximate population of 22,000 full time residents. As a department we provide Administrative, Patrol, Investigative, Crime Prevention, Dispatching and Emergency Management services to a mix of commercial, industrial and residential customers. Employment with the Essex Police Department will expose you to all these elements.Uniform Division, Rotating Shifts.

The base salary ranges, not including extra duty and Overtime pay, range from $55,890 - $99,715.Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the application.
  • Must have no less than 20/20 corrected vision in each eye.
  • Must be drug free for a minimum of three years.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree or higher, Honorable Military Service or equivalent Law Enforcement work history preferred.
  • Must have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions, nor any habitual or serious traffic offenses, Domestic violence or assault convictions. Other violations, which may adversely affect a law enforcement career, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Vermont State driver's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain Basic First Aid Certification.
  • Must successfully complete written aptitude, physical fitness, MMPI, panel interview.
  • Upon conditional offer of employment, candidate must successfully complete polygraph examination, background investigation and a physical examination by your health care provider.
  • Must be able to meet fortieth percentile physical fitness graduation standards required by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council (see below).
  • Must successfully gain full-time certification through the Vermont Police Academy (VPA). Please visit the website for full details on the requirements for the VPA at https://vcjtc.vermont.gov/.
  • Must successfully complete all department required trainings and certifications.

Experience:

Out of State Applicants- The Essex Police Department encourages out of state applicants to apply to our department. If you are currently full time certified in another state, you are still required to complete all stages of the hiring process. If your current certification is comparable to the Vermont Police Academy, the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council may waive the requirement for you to complete the Vermont Police Academy.

Hiring Process- An Essex Police Department application and formal letter of intent will begin the hiring process. Once these documents are submitted either in person, online, by mail or by email, you are officially considered an "applicant." If you are selected to continue through the hiring process, you will participate in a panel interview. Successful completion of a panel interview may result in a Conditional Officer of Employment Letter. If you accept the Conditional Offer of Employment, you should then expect to successfully complete the following requirements in no particular order: written aptitude test, physical fitness test, MMPI (psychological inventory), background investigation, polygraph and any other required tests depending on the position being applied for. Notice: if you do not successfully pass any portion of the hiring process, the Essex Police Department reserves the right to terminate the hiring process. Upon successful completion of all required testing, you will then enter the next available Full Time Vermont Police Academy session if you are not currently full time certified. After successful completion of the academy, you will then enter your Field Training Period with a Field Training Officer (FTO) from the Essex Police Department. The FTO period depends on the particular applicant, yet will be no less than 10 weeks for newly certified employees.

Vermont Police Academy- The Vermont Police Academy is a 16-week residential program designed to prepare you for a career in Law Enforcement. The curriculum stated by the State of Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council includes, "Criminal Law, Defensive Tactics, Conflict Management/Crisis Intervention Training, Community Policing, Investigative Procedures, Motor Vehicle Law, Patrol Procedures and much more." This Monday through Friday class includes athletics, physical training, academics and more. Successful completion of the Vermont Police Academy will certify you as a Law Enforcement officer by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council.
