Town of Charlton is Hiring a Light Equipment Operator - Charlton, MA Highway Dept Near Charlton, MA

The Town of Charlton is looking for a Light Equipment Operator for our Highway Department. HIRING PAY RATE: $26.04 (must have CDL and 2A Hoisting) – $29.68 (with CDL, 2A, 4E and 4G)

Job Description

Position Purpose:

Skilled work in the operation of automotive and power equipment of a wide variety but excludes those designated in the complex construction and maintenance class under heavy equipment.

Work involves responsibilities for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and other equipment which may require special techniques in equipment operation usually involving manipulation of subsidiary controls while the equipment is moving. General supervision may be exercised over a small group of unskilled workers. Assignments may be given a detail for each job or work may follow in established routine.

Position further involves semi-skilled manual work involved in maintenance and cleaning of equipment and/or facilities: DPW building.

Essential Functions:

1. Operates trucks for road maintenance and construction work, hauling laborers, materials, and equipment.

2. Operates equipment engaged in snow removal work.

3. Drive truck delivering other equipment or supplies to designated location.

4. Participates in repairing, maintenance and construction work when not actually engaged in the operation of equipment.

5. Operate power mowers, hand-driven snow blowers, woodchippers, power saws and similar equipment.

6. Does pick and shovel work in grading, patching, and otherwise maintaining street and sidewalks, applies cold patch or hot mix and seals, excavates streets to grade and loads materials into trucks, spread gravel, stone or other construction material, performs a wide variety of similar tasks in the reconstruction, repairs, and maintenance of highway projects.

7. Attend meetings and training courses as needed to ensure up-to-date safety procedures and licensing requirements.

8. Performs similar or related duties as required, directed or as situation dictates. Performs work in other areas of the Town as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Knowledge of principles of operation and securing of trucks and related automotive equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the operation of trucks and special automotive equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions.

While performing the functions of this job, the employee may be required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear for extended periods. Employees are required to traverse uneven terrain. Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaches with hands and arms; stoops, kneels, climbs, and crawls. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Frequently lifts up to 50 lbs. Frequent climbing in and out of vehicles.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

1. Possession of valid Class B CDL license with air brake endorsement as issued by Commonwealth of Massachusetts

2. Class 2A Hoisting License

3. Demonstrated ability and appropriate licenses to operate, grade, backhoe, loader etc. This is not mandatory, but preference may be given to applicants possessing the said abilities and licenses.

4. High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
