PERSONNEL & STATIONS

Within the department of 114 fire personnel across 6 fire stations, fire personnel are assigned to 1 of 3 shifts that work 24-hour rotations. Each shift is comprised of 34 personnel that provide 24/7/365 emergency response. The Fire Department’s Administrative staff works a 40-hour week and is comprised of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Support Services, Assistant Chief of Professional Standards, Administrative Logistics Coordinator, Program Support Specialist, and two Training Coordinators. Additionally, the department’s Risk Reduction Division is comprised of the Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, Fire Inspector, and a Community Risk Reduction Coordinator.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

In this position you will perform responsible fire suppression, rescue, and incident response activities on an assigned shift in the fire
department. Firefighters participate in the operations of fire suppression, rescue, incident response, and daily maintenance activities at the fire station. These activities involve firefighting, performing emergency medical service response, facility and equipment maintenance, and participation in all-hazard incident response as called-upon and multidiscipline cognitive and physical training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training.
Ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of emergency response work. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incident response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision of the assigned station's Fire Officer and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS (DUTIES & TASKS):
  • Responds to fire alarms and participates in fire suppression activities; participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical calls and provides EMT response services.
  • Participates in on-going training activities to increase and maintain skill levels as emergency responder.
  • Inspects station, and equipment for proper appearance and condition.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, and related facilities.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains fire hydrants and hoses, tests for proper operation and maintains maintenance records.
  • Assists with the preparation fire reports; participates in special projects as required.
  • Conducts pre-incident surveys.
  • Conducts station tours; makes fire prevention talks at the station and in schools and other settings.
  • Trains in NIMS modules and other required and voluntary skills and knowledge.
  • Performs related duties as required.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED (MINIMUM MUST-HAVES BY SEPTEMBER 18, 2023):
  • Graduation from High School or GED.
  • Possession of a valid class C driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina or eligibility for possession.
  • NC Firefighter Certification (Firefighter II). Candidates may provide equivalent certification with ability to receive reciprocity for IFSAC, DOD, and/or National Pro Board certification through OSFM for all applicable fire certifications.   • NC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) or the ability to obtain the NC Certification through NCOEMS by the start date or produce National Registry EMT-B for reciprocity through NCOEMS.
