Position Summary:
The Bus Handler works as part of a team, under the general supervision of the Maintenance Service Supervisor. They are responsible for the fueling, cleaning and minor service work on all transit vehicles. Removes and installs fare vaults. Drives buses through bus washer and then parks buses in the service storage area. Assists mechanics in locating and moving disabled vehicles in the facility and on the road. Works without direct supervision 2 nights per week.
Essential Functions:
35% Cleaning:
Daily, cleans exterior and interior of vehicles using various tools, appliances and cleaning supplies: empties trash, cleans dashboard, wipes seats, sweeps bus, cleans biohazards, washes wheels, cleans steps and ramps, washes motor and rear of bus, washes wheelchair lift, washes out a/c compartment.
Details interior of assigned buses based on schedule.
30% Mechanic Duties:
Operates the computerized fluid management system: fuels vehicles, checks and adjusts levels of power steering fluid, antifreeze, engine oil, transmission fluids, windshield washer fluids.
Performs post check on each bus, records all fluids put into vehicle, completes post check form and log sheet, identifies defects and notifies mechanics of needed repairs.
Checks belts, brakes, air leaks, lighting systems.
Checks and records vehicle mileage.
20% Bus Driving:
Moves buses in line for service.
Drives buses through washer, parks buses in designated locations at the end of the maintenance cycle.
Occasionally assists mechanics in locating and moving disabled vehicles on site and on road calls.
10% Fare Vaults:
Removes and installs fare vaults and transfers vaults to the safe room.
Secures safe room.
Nonessential Functions:
5% Consults with bus operators and mechanics on needed services:
Qualifications:
Must possess a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement or obtain license within 3 months of hire date.
Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Basic mechanical skills necessary with the ability to use some tools.
Must have the ability to work independently and on a team.
Have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with peers.
Possess good communication skills and be able to deal with fellow workers in a positive manner.
Ability to read and follow written instructions.
Ability to exercise good judgment with respect to bus repairs and equipment safety.
Must follow established policies and procedures of Tcat.
