Tiger Solar is Hiring a Solar PV System Design Engineer Near Charlottesville, VA

Description

The Solar PV System Design Engineer is a contributing member of the Design & Engineering team, primarily responsible for supporting the Sales, Procurement, and Construction teams by producing design packages and providing engineering support for moderately complex projects. This is a full-time, salaried position, operating under limited supervision, and utilizing expertise in the solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) fields.

· Support Sales and Business Development teams with proposal process by simulating solar PV array layouts and generating production estimates for prospective customers using tools such as TrueDesign, Scanifly, Helioscope, Google Earth, SketchUp, and PVWatts; as well as by providing occasional engineering support (e.g., specifying equipment, calculating wire size, determining interconnection method); and by producing guidance documents, as needed.

· Develop Issued for Permit (IFP) and/or Issued for Construction (IFC) design packages for solar PV systems and battery energy storage systems (BESS) based on site survey data, Tiger Solar Design Standards and Best Practices, and contractual, code, and permitting requirements to include: site plan; zoning and fire access; array attachment, racking, PV module, stringing, and grounding layouts; electrical one-line diagram and calculations; critical loads panelboard schedule and usage profile; system labeling; and detail drawings, as applicable. 

· Coordinate with racking, inverter, battery, and data acquisition system (DAS) manufacturers to obtain construction drawings and PE-stamped letters, installation and operation manuals, technical briefs and service bulletins, and other information as required.

· Coordinate with third-party engineering firms to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) stamps for structural and electrical designs as well as occasional energy usage estimates and arc flash studies. 

· Support Procurement and Construction teams by preparing bills of materials (BOMs), evaluating product technical data, leading Design-to-Construction handoff meetings for more complex projects, and responding to field inquiries and requests. 

· Complete As-Built design packages to incorporate field and design changes.

· Perform timely peer review of design packages and occasional simulations; submit all design packages for peer review and make corrections prior to providing to Construction team. 

· Maintain an organized file system for drawings and other project documents; adhere to standards and templates for uniformity in portfolio; collaborate with teammates to continuously improve internal design tools, templates, and processes.

· Maintain technical expertise and certifications in current design technology and industry standards.

Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Structural, or Mechanical) or related field, or equivalent work experience and demonstrated knowledge.

· Minimum two (2) years of experience in solar PV system design or related role; BESS design experience is a plus.

· Intermediate or Advanced NABCEP Solar PV Certification preferred.

· Working knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC); solar PV-related sections of International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC); other relevant electrical and building codes; and AHJ and utility requirements as they pertain to solar PV design.

· High proficiency with SketchUp/LayOut (or equivalent drafting software, e.g., AutoCAD) and GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, Google Earth, AutoCAD Map 3D).

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, SharePoint, Outlook, and Teams, as well as Adobe Acrobat; familiarity with engineering ticketing software (e.g., Freshdesk, Zendesk, JIRA); ability to learn new software.

· Ability to interpret electrical, structural, mechanical, and architectural drawings. 

· Strong planning, organization, and prioritization skills; ability to work autonomously and meet deadlines.

· Strong technical and analytical skills; adept at researching issues and proposing solutions; detail-oriented in all correspondence and deliverables. 

· Relationship builder that displays a positive, “Can Do” attitude; communicates with peers, supervisor, and all other external individuals both effectively and respectfully. 

· Clear understanding of, and ability to enthusiastically promote, safe workplace practices and procedures.
