Thruway Authority is Hiring an Office Assistant 2 Stores/Mail (NY HELPS) Near West Nyack, NY

Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service to a Grade 7 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the NYS Civil Service Law.
NY HELPS Qualifications:
One year of experience where most work time is spent performing activities related to mail receipt, mail distribution, storage, and/or stores keeping.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Duties Description
The candidate will be responsible for receiving, storing, safeguarding, and distributing inventory items in a Division Storeroom and may supervise employees engaged in Storeroom work. This candidate will supervise distribution of items to the Sections within a Division, and to other divisions as needed. Duties will include but not be limited to the following:
  • Receive, store, safeguard, and/or distribute inventory items as assigned.
  • Supervise and/or train storeroom employees engaged in receiving and storing inventory items.
  • Review various documents for accuracy and accounting errors.
  • Maintain and operate the Division Tool Crib and is responsible for all loaned out items.
  • Responsible for tool complements which may include issuing new or replacement tools to staff.
  • Responsible for taking cycle or special inventories.
  • Oversee and maintain oxygen, acetylene, and/or other gas receival, safe storage, marking, exchange of empties, and the related paperwork.
This is a warehouse work environment requiring physical activity, use of a forklift, and driving a box truck. This is a labor-intensive position requiring steel toed boots and much time spent on your feet. Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required. Operation of a motor vehicle will be required. The incumbent must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.

Sick Leave is credited at the rate of one-half day each biweekly pay period up to a total of 165 days.
Sick Leave Incentive Plan – Employees who have not accumulated 165 sick days and have not used sick leave during the periods of January 1st to June 30th or July 1st to December 31st, each year, may receive two days of pay for each six-month period. Employees who have a sick leave balance of 165 days, and continuously maintain that balance for each six-month period, may receive four days of pay for each six-month period.
Employees with 20 years of continuous Authority/State service may receive up to an additional five days of vacation leave accruals annually.
Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System, as well as optional enrollment in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan.
Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.
New York's 529 College Savings Program, which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.
Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Service Award Payments - Upon completion of 10 years of Authority service, eligible employees will receive a 10-year Service Award Payment. Payments are then awarded every five years as noted in the contract until 30 years of Authority service is reached. Service Awards have a positive impact on retirement.
Employees are paid bi-weekly, with no lag time.
Some positions will be eligible for downstate and/or geographical pay depending on location and title.
