Thompson Valley EMS is Hiring a Captain - Operations Near Loveland, CO

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Operations Captain functions in the clinical capacity of an advanced life support paramedic and is responsible for providing field command, supervision and leadership; mentoring and developing Lieutenants, Field Training Officers, and new and current clinical employees. Works closely with the Operations Battalion Chief to manage the emergency response system and maintain clinical performance through direct clinical supervision as well as through quality assurance and improvement chart review. Also works with Lieutenants, Field Trainers and Education and Training Division to support efforts to deliver relevant training materials and training for TVEMS employees and partner agencies. Also works closely with the TVEMS Education and Training Division to develop training materials and provide training for community members within the TVEMS service area. May also represent the organization in command posts and emergency operations centers.
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Annual pay range - $71,725 - $120,000 (consideration given to external experience, education, and qualifications when determining starting rate)

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • An associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in EMS, public health, management, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain unsanctioned Colorado State Paramedic certification or licensure.
  • Must have 3 years of ALS field ambulance experience.
  • Must possess and maintain current AHA ACLS and CPR certifications, and fulfill all requirements of the Paramedic job description.
  • Must possess and maintain a current, unrestricted Colorado driver’s license with a driving record that meets organizational requirements.
Knowledge:
Principles and techniques of training and performance evaluation and adult learning. Pre-hospital advanced emergency medical practices, TVEMS protocols, policies, procedures, and equipment. Incident command and emergency management knowledge. Basic human resources knowledge, performance evaluation and personnel management.
Skills:
Communicates clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing; supervising, training, and evaluating subordinates. Ability to set up and maintain records and files as required for effective operational functions. Operation of all company vehicles and equipment; delegating responsibility and achieving results through subordinates; maintaining order in an environment of changing priorities.
Physical Requirements:
Be able to perform such full range of body movement as bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, walking, running, lifting, climbing, and carrying all under stressful and often unstructured, uncontrolled, potentially dangerous situations. Must be physically capable to carry heavy medical and rescue equipment and the sick or injured.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides ground-level system oversight and support.
  • Manages programs within TVEMS as assigned, including policy and procedure, training and personnel and process development.
  • Helps develop Lieutenants, Field Training Officers and line employees.
  • Coordinates with Battalion Chiefs in Operations and Education, other Captains, Lieutenants, and Field Training Officers to manage the field training program.
  • Provide leadership and set an example for performance and conduct.
  • Monitors, coaches on and enforces all standard operating procedures and medical protocols.
  • Performs as the ambulance team leader and provides basic and advanced life support techniques and procedures in the field within protocol standards or at physician direction.
  • Responsible for supporting staff and overseeing activities on ambulance calls, including the medical care rendered.
  • Responsible to ensure that station duties are performed according to policy.
  • Assists in supervision and mentoring of EMT’s, Paramedics, Field Training Officers and Lieutenants.
  • Responsible for mentoring and field training of new clinical employees.
  • Safely operates various emergency vehicles in all types of terrain, weather, and environmental situations.
  • Completes timely, complete, and accurate patient care records and other required documentation.
  • Teach or assist in training sessions to the professional rescuer as well as the lay public.
  • Evaluates physical plant, equipment and vehicles and perform minor maintenance and repairs.
  • Operates all company vehicles safely in a variety of weather and road conditions.
  • Functions as the acting Operations Battalion Chief as assigned.
  • Fulfills Paramedic, Lieutenant, and FTO job descriptions.
NOTE: These job responsibilities should not be considered as the exclusive standard of the position. Incumbents will follow any other instructions, and perform any other related duties, as may be required to meet the needs of TVEMS.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Material and Equipment Involved:
Various emergency medical, fire and rescue equipment and vehicles. Working knowledge of computers and associated software.
Hazardous Exposure Category:
Category I. Involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane of skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them. (Appropriate protective measures are required when involved in a Category I task.)
LIFTING REQUIREMENTS
Very Heavy Work
Exerting in excess of 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or 80 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 35 pounds of force constantly to move equipment and patients. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for heavy work.
Thompson Valley EMS is a 3rd service EMS agency operated by an Independent Health Services District. We are the only Prehospital ALS Providers within our district and maintain a positive and collaborative relationship with partnering BLS Fire-Response and Law Enforcement agencies. Our standards of care are patient focused and guided by ethics, compassion, and evidence-based guidelines. Protocols are developed for and by TVEMS employees to remain relevant and progressive.
