Clerkship Director, Family amp; Community Medicine

The Department of Family amp; Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University is seeking a new Clerkship Director, who will be responsible for the central administrative and education oversight of the core Family Medicine clerkship. The Department has a long-standing commitment to education, as evidenced by a nationally recognized university-based residency as well as several outstanding fellowship programs. Central to our departmental mission is training the next generation of physicians how to improve the health care of our patients, families, and communities, with a particular emphasis on health equity and care for the underserved. We are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated excellence in the skills of teaching, curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, mentorship, and is committed to further expanding our clerkship focus on diversity, inclusion, and equity in medical education. The Clerkship Director will be expected to develop a primary care clinical practice, with optional rotation through the family medicine hospital service. The candidate will be eligible for an academic appointment at the appropriate rank.

Curricular development

  • Review and ensure currency of the clerkshiprsquo;s learning objectives. Ensure clerkship learning objectives are linked to the SKMC Medical Education Program Objectives.
  • Review and ensure currency and relevancy of the clerkshiprsquo;s curriculum. Revise and include content as determined by the SKMC Curriculum Committee.
  • Review and update the curricular delivery and learning strategies as needed.
  • Review the clinical learning environment to ensure adequacy of learning and patient care opportunities.

Student education and assessment

  • Ensure students are meeting the clerkship learning objectives.
  • Ensure students complete all required curricular and clinical experiences.
  • Review and ensure currency of the clerkship assessment methods. Ensure alignment of the assessment strategies with the clerkship learning objectives.
  • Provide orientation to students at the beginning of the clerkship.
  • Ensure students receive formative feedback by at least mid-portion of the clerkship.
  • Ensure students receive final evaluations, which include narrative feedback, within 6 weeks of the completion of the clerkship.
  • Oversee student remediation processes and outcomes.
  • Promote a diverse, inclusive, and healthy environment in the clerkship.
  • Be available to meet with students on an as-needed basis to discuss performance or any clerkship-related issues.
  • Ensure that all clinical sites provide comparable education to students based on the clerkship learning objectives, curricular content, and assessment performance.
  • Participate in the processes to ensure a safe learning environment for students across the clinical sites.

Educator (faculty and housestaff) development and assessment

  • Ensure regular assessment of educators by the students at all clinical sites and distribute and/or provide feedback to the educators.
  • Ensure all faculty across clinical sites (including non-paid faculty) have SKMC faculty appointments.
  • Provide education of educators at all clinical sites about clerkship expectations for the students, clerkship learning objectives, and assessment methods.
  • Provide education of educators on their roles and best practices in pedagogy, student feedback, and student assessment.

Administration of the clerkship

  • Prepare for the LCME surveys and site visits.
  • Attend various educational meetings as requested by the SKMC.
  • Oversee performance of the clerkship administrator.

Continuous Quality Improvement

  • Document the occurrence, evaluation, outcomes, and actions resulting from all curricular development processes.
  • Evaluate the departmental processes to ensure compliance with various SMKC and LCME educational targets.
  • Review and act if needed on student and SKMC feedback pertaining to any aspect of the clerkship.
  • Board certified/board eligible individual with a medical degree (MD or DO) in the specialty for which they will serve as a core clerkship director.
  • Additional education: completed or plans to complete additional education for pedagogical skills. This can include certificate or post-graduate programs, or any courses or workshops completed through a professional specialty society that focus on medical education and pedagogic principles.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical supervision and teaching of learners as evidenced by the learner evaluations and enthusiasm for undergraduate medical education, as well as excellence in learner assessment and formative feedback delivery.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
