About The Waldorf School of Garden City

The Waldorf School of Garden City (WSGC) is an independent college preparatory day school for children in Pre-Nursery through Twelfth Grade. Established in 1947, the ten-acre campus is located in the suburban village of Garden City, just 18 miles from midtown Manhattan. The School’s beautiful 10-acre campus features playgrounds, gardens and playing fields bordered by a wooded “Nature Trail” which provides a visual and environmental boundary from the suburban houses and university buildings that surround us. The indoor facilities, all of which are connected, feature a historical main building entrance, a large gymnasium, a performance space, a modern library center, a fiber arts studio, three laboratories, a woodshop, music and practice rooms, a cafeteria, and a visual arts studio. The School also owns Camp Glen Brook, a 200-acre farm, in New Hampshire which is utilized as a part of our curriculum for grades 3-12. The Waldorf School of Garden City is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools and the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and is recognized by the New York State Education Department. Guided by our outstanding and dedicated faculty the Waldorf School of Garden City is a leader in education, offering a full education from Early Childhood through High School.

Job Summary

The Director of Finance is an integral part of the School’s senior leadership team and is responsible for managing both the financial operations and financial resources of the school. This position works closely with School leadership and reports to the School Administrator.

Job Description:

Primary duties and responsibilities of the position include:

  • Managing the School’s and Camp’s financial operations to ensure financial health and safeguarding of the School’s and Camp’s assets, including supervision of all Business Office staff and Glen Brook with responsibilities for: tuition billing and collection, accounts payable, external contracting, payroll and employee benefits, human resources, accounting and financial reporting, regulatory reporting and compliance, and other business operations activities.
  • Oversee all financial reporting, budget projections, internal controls, as well as development of finance-related policies and procedures, and management of banking activities and management of cash and investment accounts.
  • Working collaboratively with the faculty, administrative leadership, and Board to develop the School’s annual operating budget and long-range financial projections, including enrollment forecasting and administration of the School’s tuition assistance resources.
  • Updating the Finance Committee and Board regarding the School performance to budget, including analysis of actual operating results versus budget and appropriate variance analysis.
  • Participating in the development of overarching school financial strategy with the Board Finance Committee — providing recommendations, financial analysis, projections, and other data to inform the process.
  • Working with appropriate external resources to research alternatives and manage the renewal of annual employee benefits, including medical insurance, life insurance, and retirement plans.
  • Ensuring that human resources policies and practices are clearly articulated, consistently applied, and conform to legal requirements.
  • Overseeing all activities related to the School’s annual audit, including coordinating with the independent auditors and providing the Audit Committee with relevant information.
  • Producing annual reporting information as required by accrediting bodies, as well as state and local agencies.
  • Ensuring that the School maintains compliance with all state and local requirements.
  • Acting as a liaison with School legal counsel and insurance providers regarding risk matters.

Required Skills & Capacities:

The successful candidate will possess the following background, skills and capacities:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; advanced degree or CPA preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience in finance and accounting, preferably in a school or other not-for-profit environment.
  • Proven success in a senior administrative role, ideally with experience working with a not-for-profit Board.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, with a capacity to organize and motivate people.
  • Proficient in Blackbaud or similar School Information System.
  • High ethical standards.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong capacity to work collaboratively with members of all School constituencies.
  • Keen analytical skills and a detail-oriented work style.
  • Proven commitment to supporting and fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in all areas of organizational life.
  • Willingness to understand and embrace Waldorf education; with experience in a Waldorf School or understanding of Waldorf education a plus.

Salary:

$140,000 – $150,000 commensurate with experience.
