JOB IDENTIFICATION

Position Title: MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Salary Range: B 175

Department: Public Works

Division: Building & Grounds, Flood Control, Refuse Collection,
Street & Alleys, Traffic Engineering, Tree Maintenance,
Water & Sewer, Water Meter

Reports to: Division Crew Leader or Supervisor or Superintendent

Supervises: None

JOB PURPOSE

Under immediate supervision, performs work Jnvoiving manual labor and physically
demanding tasks in the areas of refuse collection, street and aliey maintenance, tree
maintenance, water and sewer operations, street drainage structure maintenance, traffic
control system maintenance and street/parking !ot operations. Maintains the Village's
public buildings and property as wei! as appurtenances on public right-of-way. Operates
trucks and other gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. All divisions assist in snow and
ice removal operations as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Buildings & Grounds

  • Repair faucets, toiiets, urinals and sinks and facilitates other related plumbing repairs.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repair to building sump pumps.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to public building overhead doors.
  • Repairs private and public sprinkler systems that have been damaged from snow plowing
operations.
  • Performs carpentry, dry wafiing and woodworking repairs and improvements.

  • Performs painting, caulking and weatherproofing repairs.
  • Performs miscellaneous electrical repairs and improvements.
  • Performs work with a considerable degree of independence, with more unusual or difficult
work outlined in conference with supervisors.
  • Maintains building and janitoriaf commodity stock and inventory.
  • Performs in-house cleaning as necessary.
  • Waters grass, flower boxes and shrubs. Collects litter and debris. Shovels snow, and
spreads abrasives on walkways after snowfail. Keeps soap/sanitizer and janitorial towel
stocks replenished in Village Hal! washrooms.
  • Replaces fuses, washers on faucets, light bulbs and ballasts as required.
  • Responsible for setting rooms up for scheduled meetings and sessions.

Refuse Collection

  • Works as member of a refuse crew loading refuse into truck by pushing staged refuse
carts to the trucks for mechanical dumping and then returning cart to proper staging point.
  • Alley dean-up of un-staged refuse & debris.
  • Collects refuse from public trash receptacles on established schedule.
  • Responsible for trash (refuse and recycling) receptacle maintenance.
  • Keeps alleys clear of overgrown brush by using chain saw, gas hedger, rake, etc.
  • Collects staged rubbish such as carpeting, furniture, appliances, etc.
  • Performs litter abatement on established schedules at various Village public properties.

Street & Alleys / Tree Maintenance

  • Repairs streets using asphalt material by operating the roller on the patches, raking the
materiai out in the patches, running loads of material from plant to site.
  • Works with cold patch crew.
  • Maintains alleys by hauling loads of stone in dump trucks to the alleys for grading, hauling
waste stone out of alleys, cleaning aliey approachments. Assists with aliey maintenance
by driving, transporting and removing afiey spoils.
  • Assists with leaf collection duties by pushing leaves and driving truck to haul ioads of
leaves from the streets to the Public Works yard.

  • Performs landscaping duties by cutting grass using riding mower, tractor or push mower,
trimming hedges using gas hedger, pruning trees, puliing weeds, picking up garbage and
debris from medians. May plant flowers and bushes; water flowers and sod at Village
facilities.
  • Assists tree crew in removal or trimming of trees by running chain saw on the ground to
cut large sections of tree, roping sections of tree, driving and operating chipper, removing
stumps by using stumper. May go up in bucket of the high ranger as instructed by crew
leader to perform cutting or trimming.
  • Cleans up after heavy storms by picking up branches that have fallen from parkway trees
onto streets or parkways.

Traffic Engineering

  • Installs and maintains signs, sign posts, paint and thermoplastic pavement markings,
wheel stops, parking meters, street and parking lot light poles and luminaries, banners,
Downtown decorations, etc.
  • Maintains residential streetlights; cleans lenses, performs electrical systems repairs,
replaces ballasts, builes and controls.
  • Responsible for the placement of barricades, where and when required, and for providing
the necessary traffic control for specific situations such as block parties, street closures,
etc.
  • Assists on community events (i.e. festivals, Fourth of Ju!y Parade, etc.) and other
scheduled events.
  • Maintains established parking zones.
  • Trims tree branches and other vegetative materials when they are obstructing signs.

Water & Sewer / Flood Control / Water Meter

  • Digs up and replaces fire hydrants and water lines; thaws frozen hydrants. Repairs &
maintains hydrants.
  • Repairs broken water mains. Repairs or replaces broken sewer mains & files.
  • Cleans catch basins and inlets via VacA!!; repairs or replaces catch basins and ti!es.
  • Repairs or replaces water main shut-off valves.
  • Repairs or replaces manholes, valve vaults, catch basins and inlets.
  • Rods public sewer tiles and iniet tiles with root cutters or high-pressure water nozzle.
  • Televises sewers with camera truck.
  • Cleans and maintains hoiding tanks.

  • Monitors sewers and flood control structures during and after a heavy rain.

All Divisions

  • Cleans and washes (inside & outside) assigned vehacies and equipment and assists with
routine maintenance by checking oil, lights, tires and reporting any damage or breakage to
Automotive Division.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal operations by driving dump truck, pick up truck or refuse
truck affixed with plow attachment; driving bombardiers to remove snow from public
sidewalks or by manually removing snow from sidewalk adjacent to publicly maintained
buildings.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Changes minor parts on HVAC systems; performs building maintenance and repairs.

  • Delivers incoming suppiies to proper iocation; informs supervisor of maintenance items
needing attention. (Building & Grounds)
  • Repairs or replaces Village refuse & recycling containers as needed. (Refuse Collection
Division)
  • Repair minor damage to fences and posts caused by Village operations. (Refuse
Collection Division)
  • Replaces sod damaged by snow removal operations. (Refuse Collection Divisions)
  • Posts no parking signs prior to street sweeping operations. (Street & Alleys Division)
  • Paints and numbers fire hydrants. (Water & Sewer Division)

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Fundamental knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC systems and general

  • Knowledge of the operation, servicing and minor maintenance of trucks and other

OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS / LICENSES

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B) or have the ability to obtain within 90-days
of employment (All Divisions)
  • A Pesticide Applicator's Certificate may be required if individual is assigned to a
landscaping task that requires the use of pesticides to control the spread of weeds.

  • ISA Certified Arborist designation preferred (Tree Division)

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The work functions of this position are representative of heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds
of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to push, pull or lift objects.

Occasionally employee must exert up to 100 pounds of force to push, pul! or iift objects.
Employee should seek out assistance when carrying out duties requiring exertion of 100
pounds of force. Depending upon the division to which an individual is assigned, physical
activities may inciude constant walking, standing or driving; frequent reaching, stooping,
kneeling, climbing, or crawling or crouching in confined spaces. Must have adequate hearing
to communicate with co-workers and perceive warning alarms such as back-up signals on
vehicles. For certain tasks, must be free of coior blindness.

The work is performed primariiy outdoors subject to year-round climate conditions. The
worker is subject to high noise levels and vibrations from equipment; may be subject to
hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts and working in high places; may be
subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases or poor ventilation.
