Purpose of Position

The Vice President of Business Intelligence and IT Services reports directly to the COO of University Lands and is a key member of the Management Team. The VP works with the COO, and the rest of the Executive Leadership Team as necessary and has direct oversight of the IT services and Data Teams, to develop and continually assess the strategic direction required to maximize revenue generated from PUF Lands. The VP of Business Intelligence and IT Services is a key leader at University Lands and is responsible for helping to build the culture required to achieve the goal of being the leading land management organization in the country.

Essential Functions

  • Directly responsible for leading the functional areas of GIS, IT Infrastructure and Ops, Data Analytics, and Business Solutions and Application Development to identify and implement best practices to execute the strategy to responsibly steward PUF Lands and maximize the value of the lands
  • Promotes excellence and a high level of performance across areas of responsibility and entire organization. Establishes and leads a positive culture, builds consensus, and bring others along with vision and strategy
  • Works with line managers across multiple functions to determine cost-effective resourcing needs, including people, processes, and systems
  • Leads efforts to align the team’s goals with strategic objectives and to measure progress and perform to meet desired organizational outcomes and to meet or exceed KPI targets
  • Prioritizes business needs, delegates work, and creates accountability across the Business Intelligence and IT Services Teams at University Lands
  • Balances team’s projects and initiatives with business needs of UL, identifying risks and developing mitigation strategies
  • Works closely with the COO, the Executive Leadership Team, and the Management Team to instill and maintain changes in culture and develop and execute organizational vision and strategy
  • Sets, reviews, and approves internal policies, procedures, and controls for the UL IT Services and Business Intelligence teams
  • Leads with a demonstrated ability to work well across the table with IT Vendors for products and services with ability to be firm but fair in negotiations
  • Directly responsible for delegation and prioritization of work between IT Services and Business Intelligence teams and all other UL disciplines under the direction of the COO with input from the UL Management Team and the Executive Leadership Team, and helps their teams’ set priorities and work to develop best practices for internal client management and communication
  • Direct influence on executing the vision and strategy for innovation and culture improvements, serves as a key member of the UL Master Data Management Team and the UL Data Governance Team to communicate the value and long-term benefits of this data innovation to support the desired culture and efficiency improvements, evidenced through extensive planning, educating, designing, applying, measuring, and monitoring this critical need for UL’s data

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of solution architecture, software development best practices, and development lifecycles. Manage interdisciplinary teams to create effective and reliable solutions.
  • Must possess excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to create policies and procedures related to the functions of solution teams and effectively communicate complex business requirements and interconnected business processes.
  • Independent thinker, driven self-starter, proven problem-solving skills, strong speaking and written skills with all types of audiences, excellent professional judgment, strong ability to work with and significantly add value as a team member, be willing to help others find opportunities to succeed and give/share credit to others, make efforts to provide creative solutions.
  • Effective organization, process management and facilitation and documentation skills.
  • Strong personnel coaching, management, delegation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate, lead, and learn (or the propensity to learn such skills), plus a desire for personal and professional growth, and the desire to help lead others to progress and grow is required.
  • Extensive experience in managing multiple disciplines within an oil and gas-oriented company. Possesses an extensive industry network and knowledge of essential interdisciplinary teams, including business analysts, contract and land administration, GIS, IT, Records Management, and software development and data analysts’ positions, with demonstrated excellence in recruiting, professional development, performance management, and retention. Deep understanding and knowledge of the oil and gas industry, and related information technology practices and ability to use knowledge to develop UL’s strategic vision and help managers turn vision into tactical plans.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Energy-related, Information Systems, or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in overall Information Technology, Project Management, Engineering, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Energy Management, Information Management, Computer Science, or related field
  • 15 years’ experience in project management, IT, and/or software development or related field
  • 20 years’ experience in the oil & gas, land management, or related industries

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions
  • 10% Travel

Additional Information

The standard retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. However, the incumbent of this position may elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

A background check will be conducted on applicants under final consideration. Background checks are conducted by third-party vendors. Upon request from the third-party vendor, candidates under final consideration must provide the required information for the background checks to be completed.
