Position Information
Position Title:
Assistant Research Scientist - Postdoc Arctic Ecosystem Modeling
Functional Title:
Position Number:
Job Description:
We invite applications for a postdoctoral scholar for an Assistant Research Scientist (ARS) position at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) in Solomons, Maryland. This ARS position is a one-to-two-year position that combines Arctic ecosystem modeling with the possibility of ship based field work. The successful applicant will contribute ecosystem-based modeling of multidisciplinary data focused on benthic systems and key environmental drivers in the Pacific Arctic as part of the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO; http://dbo.cbl.umces.edu). The successful applicant will work to incorporate DBO physical, biogeochemical, and biological field data into a coupled biophysical model to be developed for the Pacific Arctic. The successful applicant will link field and modeling activities that will promote development of forecasts for predicting ecosystem responses to changing sea ice conditions and warming seawater in the Pacific Arctic. A key focus of the modeling effort will be studies of the status and trends related to pelagic-benthic coupling and benthic population dynamics in responses to key physical drivers in the Pacific influenced Arctic. Many of these environmental drivers for changing biological communities are not directly driven by differences in ice cover, but instead relate to different advective regimes, stratification, current patterns, and upwelling events that influence nutrient content, plankton and benthic populations dynamics.
This ARS position requires a doctorate by the start of the position and has the potential for an extension beyond two years, if funding becomes available.
Contact Drs. Jackie Grebmeier (jgrebmei@umces.edu) and/or Lee Cooper (cooper@umces.edu) for additional information about the position.
