Job Description
The University Complaince Officer will provide resources, guidance and management to navigate UMCES complex regulatory and ethical responsibilities and to help stakeholders determine the right course of action. This position is responsible for facilitating resolutions, enhancing a culture of compliance and ethics, and balancing risk management & compliance with mission-driven activities. University Administration is based in Cambridge, MD, but this position could be hybrid or have a location in Annapolis as well as the requirement to travel to our other unit locations within MD.

Job Duties
Policy Development and Implementation (30%):
  • Develop, review and update university policies & procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Implement and communicate policies to relevant university departments and personnel.
Regulatory Compliance and Audit/Risk Assessment Management (30%):
  • Stay abreast of changes in legislation and regulations affecting UMCES administrative, operational & research matrixes.
  • Conduct regular audits to assess the university’s compliance enterprise with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Identify potential areas of compliance risk and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
  • Collaborate with relevant departments to implement risk management processes.
  • University Records & Information management
Collaboration, Education/Training Management (20%):
  • Develop and delivery training programs to educate university faculty and staff on compliance requirements.
  • Foster a culture of compliance through workshops, seminars, and ongoing communication.
  • Work closely with university departments to ensure alignment with compliance goals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the university and regulatory agencies.
Investigations and Reporting (20%);
  • Conduct internal investigations in response to reported compliance concerns.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory bodies as necessary.
  • Management of confidential reporting systems.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business/public administration or a relevant field required; Proven experience in compliance roles within higher education or non profit/research sector. In-depth knowledge and ability to interpret relevant laws and regulations, such as research compliance (USDA, iRB, IACUC, OLAW), laboratory safety compliance, and other higher education compliance standards. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal abilities. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in risk management and/or compliance, a deep understanding of relevant laws and regulations, and the ability to collaborate effectively with various internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree or certification in compliance/risk management is preferred.
Physical Demands
The selected candidate would be expected to drive to all UMCES locations on a routine basis (weekly) as a part of this position’s activities & responsibilities " (Use of state or personal vehicle)
