The University of Iowa is Hiring a Pharmacy Specialist 100%- Downtown Near Iowa, IA

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Clinical Pharmacy Specialist to join our Medical Center Downtown Pharmacy team. The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist – Downtown Campus pharmacist serves as a leader both within the Department of Pharmaceutical Care and throughout the enterprise.

This person will be focused on: quality initiatives; formulary management; medication use evaluations; medication-related policies, guidelines, protocols; acting as a drug information resource for pharmacy staff and multi-disciplinary team members; and participation in safety initiatives (e.g., root cause analysis, safety oversight, etc.). This person may also perform medication order processing and dispensing functions, when necessary.
The University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, Iowa) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Advances the quality of patient care and contributes to safe medication-related practices through participation in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Assists pharmacy staff in providing clinical services that meet the quality, financial, and strategic objectives of the institution and the department.
  • Assists pharmacy leadership, multidisciplinary teams, and medical staff in complying with The Joint Commission standards, other medication management standards, regulatory goals, and quality metrics.
  • Provides leadership through development and implementation of pharmacy services and by contributing to the enhancement of the clinical skills and pharmaceutical and therapeutic knowledge of pharmacy staff.
  • Assists pharmacy leadership with assessment of workflows and implementation of revisions and process improvements.
  • Identifies educational needs related to medication management and provides drug information and education to staff, providers, patients, and community members.
  • Serves as a back-up provider for the UIHC Drug Information Center.
  • Presents inservices, educational classes, participates in educational programs, and develops or reviews written/visual/audio materials for both healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Participates in formulary management through evaluation of new drug requests, medication use and discussion of therapeutic alternatives with staff and providers; including routine formulary evaluation and drug shortage mitigation and response strategies.
  • Serves as a key member of the Downtown Campus Pharmacy and Therapeutics workgroup and participates in other committees, workgroups, task forces, or project teams as assigned.
  • Participates in provider-pharmacist collaborative practice agreements and protocols for pharmacist-provided medication management services as both a pharmacist providing those services and as a peer reviewer.
  • Serves as a mentor and role model for pharmacy staff, residents, and students by displaying a high level of professionalism and medication/disease state knowledge.
  • Provides pharmacy services as assigned, including but not limited to, pharmacy consults for medication management or patient teaching, optimization of medication therapy, order processing, medication preparation and evaluation prior to dispensing.
  • Completes and maintains compliance with all competencies, educational, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and pharmacy residents as assigned, including conducting evaluations and providing feedback on performance and knowledge assessments.
  • Assists in the training of new staff members, pharmacy students, and pharmacy residents.
  • Assists with the development, revision, enhancement, and review of policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Analyzes data related to medication use, therapeutic patterns, cost-savings initiatives or potential, adherence to restriction criteria, or other related data items.

Education Requirements:

  • Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy
  • Current licensure by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required; includes those eligible for obtaining this licensure

Experience Requirements:

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGYI pharmacy practice residency or 2 years’ experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Medication Use Evaluation Specialist, Drug Information Specialist, or Clinical Pharmacy Specialist.
  • Knowledge of and work experience with The Joint Commission accreditation standards
  • Board certification in Pharmacotherapy
