The Texas Zoo is Hiring a Part-Time Seasonal Educator Near Victoria, TX

Zoo Educators are responsible for providing care and upkeep for a wide variety of educational animals. They will also assist in providing educational programming with our education collection at off-site locations such as libraries, schools, special events, etc. Animal Encounters are provided by conducting daily scripted educational programming with the education collection on-site for scheduled groups like field trips, parties, events, etc. Additional guidance is received through established policies and procedures, plus verbal and written communications. The candidate must be able to work weekends and holidays, during emergencies, work closely with other employees, volunteers, and the general public, and work a flexible schedule.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years or older
  • Must possess a High School diploma or higher
  • Prior domestic and/or exotic animal experience is preferred
  • A strong ability to work in a team-oriented atmosphere while maintaining excellent independent work skills. Great interpersonal skills and a commitment to providing outstanding educational programs is a must
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, and Canva
  • Physical demands include balance, standing, kneeling, crouching, walking, reaching, grasping, feeling, and finger dexterity
  • Capable of lifting, pushing, and pulling 50 pounds, and handling animal carriers
  • Must possess a valid Texas State Driver’s license and maintain insurance

Responsibilities

  • 55% - Animal care including feeding, cleaning, and habitat maintenance
  • 20% - Zoo education programs
  • 15% Program planning and preparation, event planning, meetings, and training
  • 10% - Other duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provides daily animal care, training, and environmental enrichment for collection
  • Capable of strictly following policies and procedures and of learning species and resident animal information
  • Preps food, adding appropriate supplements, and feeds animals according to schedules on the diet boards and notes as updated
  • Documents amount fed to animals as required, and documents the amount eaten from the previous day, and enters to record
  • Coordinates with the Education Manager on all husbandry and maintenance related to animal care
  • Assists in the maintenance of all enclosures, exhibits, and work areas for keeping captive wildlife in a safe and secure environment
  • Implements strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Exercises the ability to multi-task, adapt to change, and prioritize effectively
  • Provide strong customer service at all times to patrons and stakeholders
  • Engage a self-motivated attitude as an individual and team member
  • Demonstrate an appreciation and respect for animals at all times
  • Required to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, evenings, and weekends as needed for program needs and special events
  • Assists staff, including giving guided tours and correcting unsafe public behavior, as necessary

Job Types: Part-time, Seasonal

Pay: From $8.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 32 per week
