To learn more, please visit our website https://vetmed.tamu.edu/ What we want The Veterinary Technician III is responsible to provide support to veterinarians in the instruction of clinical skills which include: primary patient care, basic surgery, diagnostic techniques and anesthesia with an emphasis on clinical techniques, specifically anesthesia and surgery related techniques. May serve as senior technician or the intermediate supervisor to veterinary technical staff within the clinical skills service group. Oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the clinical skills laboratory. What you need to know Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience. Required Education: Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Experience: Four years of technical experience in a veterinary hospital or referral clinic environment Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry. Ability to manage time wisely and prioritize duties and cases. Working knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary teaching hospital. Thorough knowledge of equipment used in area of specialization, such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, Multi- parameter monitoring equipment, ventilators, blood gas analyzers, CO2 monitors, defibrillators, and other equipment required for anesthetic management of veterinary patients. Knowledge of basic surgical instruments, aseptic technique, basic diagnostic techniques. Ability to communicate effectively and positively at all levels within the clinical skills laboratory and the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital. Must be able to work within time constraints and in crisis situations. Mastery of Technical Skills Level III. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Preferred Education: Specialty training in anesthesia, surgery or related area. Preferred Experience: Specialty training in anesthesia, surgery or related area. Two years relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced technical ability and strong knowledge of anesthesia, basic surgical instruments and procedures and basic diagnostic equipment and procedures. Advanced ability and strong knowledge of patient evaluation including basic physical examination and patient monitoring in both routine and emergency presentations. Responsibilities CLINICAL AND INSTRUCTIONAL: Provides clinical support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of anesthesia, surgery, primary and intensive care, and zoonotic disease control, including administration of medications, maintenance of complete and accurate medical records, and collection, preparation and submission of clinical pathology samples; collects patient medical history; performs or assists in patient medical evaluation; assists in instruction and induction of general procedures preparatory to surgery, fluids administration, and replacement therapy; performs critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed; provides physical restraint for safe handling of multiple species of patient animals. Effectively cross trains between large and small animal hospitals. Instructs students in basic suture and surgical technique, including aseptic technique. Instructs students in instrument handling and simple suture patterns and ligation techniques. Instructs students in preparing patients for surgical procedures. Instructs students in basic diagnostic skills associated with specific areas of interest including but not limited to: ultrasound, radiology, dermatology, clinical pathology and routine health screening. Instructs students in preparing patients for diagnostic procedures. Instructs and assists students? in designing anesthetic protocols. Responsible for teaching and training technician rounds and clinical techniques. Performs or assists veterinary students in recording patient medical information. Instructs and assists students in inducing and maintaining anesthesia in a variety of animal species. Performs and instructs students in venous and arterial catheterization, endotracheal intubation, and the administration of pre-medicants, induction agents, inhalant anesthetics and appropriate analgesics. Assists students and/or staff in preparing patients for surgical procedures to include intubations, proper clipping and aseptic surgical site preparation. Instructs and assists students in monitoring anesthetized patients. Instructs and assists students in proper anesthesia recovery techniques. Performs critical and intensive nursing care or life sustaining emergency care as needed. Provides physical restraint for safe handling of multiple species of patient animals Able to restrain aggressive animals. Effectively cross trains between large and small animal hospitals. May perform some or all the duties of a Veterinary Technician II. SUPERVISORY: May assume intermediate supervisory authority for and train subordinate veterinary technical staff, student technicians and student workers assigned within the Clinical Skills Laboratory; may be required to assign personnel emergency duty shift schedules and work assignments; may assist with job performance evaluations for assigned staff; acts as liaison with supervisor on personnel matters affecting morale, job efficiency, and clinical primary care of hospitalized animals. EQUIPMENT: Ensures that the proper equipment is available to facilitate patient and student safety. Maintains and operates point of care laboratory equipment. Maintains and operates patient monitoring equipment. Maintains accountability for inventory control of capital equipment within the service area and assumes responsibility for performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks on hospital capital equipment items; Arranges for Clinical Skills Laboratory equipment maintenance when necessary. MONITOR AND RECORD DATA: Instructs and assists students in maintaining accurate and complete patient anesthesia and medical records. Ensures that all charges generated from Clinical Skills Laboratory are captured and correctly entered into the hospital information system (VMIS) or other required management system. Ensures that all controlled substances used in the Clinical Skills Laboratory are properly documented and accounted for. Assists with organizing and maintaining the Clinical Skills Laboratory scheduling system. Reviews student records and pharmacy slips for accuracy and completeness. Instructs students in recording the patient s physiological data and all medications given on medical records. TRAINING & CERTIFICATION: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, and Licensure Radiation/MRI safety Infection Control Aseptic Technique Rabies prophylaxis Maintain certification or licensure where appropriate Demonstrates the basic skills of a Veterinary Technician III. MAINTAIN SERVICE AREA: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks supplies, drugs, and solutions. Cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service area. Provides infectious disease control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working environment. Performs other duties as assigned.
