We are currently looking for a full-time Nursing Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator. The Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator reports to the Dean of Nursing and is accountable for planning, developing, maintaining, and effectively implementing the day-to-day operations of the nursing simulation and skills laboratory to provide students with quality instruction and a safe learning environment. Facilitate student advancement from performance of basic nursing skills to resolution of simple to complex patient care situation via high-fidelity simulation. Directs, manages, and evaluates student learning in the simulation and skills laboratory.
Responsibilities of the position include:
  • Collaborates with faculty to develop and refine simulation scenarios to achieve the course expected outcomes based on student and faculty needs.
  • Designs, develops, implements and evaluates scenarios, simulated learning activities, and educational materials for all nursing courses in collaboration with nursing faculty.
  • Collaborates with faculty to provide for consistent and relevant student learning experiences to meet course and clinical objective in the nursing labs.
  • Assists students and faculty in meeting course objectives through the utilization of the simulation and skills lab.
  • Establishes and updates policies, standard practices and procedures according to The International Nursing Association for clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Standards of Best Practice.
  • Assists in the implementation of simulation standards and best practices and provides faculty with evidenced based guidelines to ensure positive and consistent learning experiences for students. Evaluate faculty, simulation staff, and students as necessary as related to simulation (including standards for simulation facilitation, debriefing, participant assessment, and learning evaluation).
  • Remains current in the application of simulated learning experiences according to the Kentucky Board of Education: Attendance at simulation conferences; Completion of educational activities related to simulation; or holding a credential issued by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare or a simulation preparation program recognized by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation.
  • Oversees the functioning and scheduling of all Nursing Skills Labs and the High Fidelity Simulation Labs.
  • Assists students upon faculty referral for skills lab remediation.
  • Conducts High Fidelity simulations including the debriefing process, formative evaluation of student activity during the scenarios, and the effectiveness of simulation activities. Provides feedback to students during simulation debriefing.
  • Provides simulation training and practice for faculty.
  • Prepares requisitions and initiates the ordering process to maintain inventory within the simulation and skills lab.
  • Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies used in the simulation and skills lab.
  • Ensures inventory levels are maintained in a cost-effective way.
  • Monitors and perform routine minor maintenance and repair on all lab equipment to ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Maintains policies and procedure manual for simulation and skills labs.
  • Maintains log of students, time, and skills practiced.
  • Maintains appropriate warranties on simulation and lab equipment.
  • Maintains and operate the simulation and skills lab to include troubleshooting and working with information technology personnel, etc.
  • Ensures supervision of students in the lab, maintaining safe practices, and abiding by all established policies and procedures for the lab.
  • Contributes to the evaluation of students during skills and simulation activities.
  • Develops, organizes, and maintains simulation and skills lab schedules.
  • Maintains scheduled lab hours to serve students.
  • Acts as the liaison with other departments in scheduling the use of simulation.
  • Ensures safety and maintains OSHA standards within the simulation and skills lab; to include appropriate disposal of hazardous waste and sharps.
  • Represents the University School of Nursing in the community by participating in college programs to introduce high school students to the nursing simulation and skills laboratory.
  • Completes and maintains annual inventory of the nursing simulation and skills lab and determines inventory needs.
  • Attends all nursing faculty meetings and in-services.
  • Performs random student drug screening.
  • Participates in program review visits and activities with the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
  • Assists in development, implementation, and evaluation of the Practical Nurse (LPN) and Associate Degree Nurse (AAS/RN) programs. Participates in the systematic Plan of Evaluation for both programs.
  • Assists in development and implementation of departmental and program policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of Nursing
Requirements of the position include:
  • Master’s degree in nursing.
  • Five years of full-time professional nursing clinical experience.
  • Two years of full-time teaching experience in a nursing program.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
  • Holds a nursing license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Kentucky.
  • Experience in simulation utilizing high-fidelity manikins and other relevant equipment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize tasks and space
  • Basic knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and parties outside of the university
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve and make decisions effectively
