Animal Health Technician I

Full-Time: 37.5 hours

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food, Animal Industry Division has a full-time vacancy for 19-4010 Agricultural Technician.

Summary:

Inspect, test, and regulate domestic animals to detect, isolate and eradicate animal disease for the health and welfare of the state and to protect human health from zoonotic disease (diseases of animals communicable to humans).

18 Months of additional relevant experience = Associate's degree

36 Months of additional relevant experience = Bachelor's degree

54 Months of additional relevant experience = Master's degree

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Organizes, prepares and confirms livestock and poultry disease surveillance schedules which may also include farm visits with multiple agency staff.

Conducts testing on livestock and poultry for disease surveillance, including capture, restraint, identification, and collection of samples.

Corresponds with license holders and potential license holders regarding regulatory requirements and licensing processes.

Inspects license holders for compliance with licensing standards, both routinely and in response to complaints.

Assists in the development and maintenance of emergency response and mitigation plans germane to animal industry and agriculture. This may include field work to train for natural disasters, respond to foreign animal diseases and bioterrorism threats, and monitor nuclear contamination of agriculture products in support of NH Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM).

Assists law enforcement with subject matter assessment of animal cruelty complaints.

Works with employees from multiple other agencies on areas of common regulatory authority, to include USDA, NH Fish & Game, NH DHHS, NH HSEM, and others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate's degree from a recognized college or technical institute with major study in animal science, agriculture, biological sciences, resource management, or a related field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Three years' experience working with livestock, domesticated farm animals or related experience. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certification: Eligibility for a New Hampshire Driver’s license or access to reliable personal transportation.

Recommended Work Traits: Considerable knowledge of the common diseases of domestic farm animals and the skills to perform the tests required. Knowledge of the effects of medications on animals. Knowledge of livestock in evaluating diseases which affect them. Ability to perform tests quickly and painlessly. Ability to establish and maintain public confidence and interest in the program of livestock disease control. Ability to program livestock disease control. Ability to instruct others in proper livestock inspection. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
