Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How you will make an impact:

  • The incumbent of this position works as a Braille Specialist.
  • Teach all forms of Braille as needed to individual students or student groups including; UEB Code, Nemeth Code, Tactile graphics reading writing and producing, slate and stylus, and use of Braille note-taking devices, and other Braille technology. Identify and develop short-term objectives into learning units; Assist in development and implementation of IEP’s; Write IEP goals, objectives, present levels of performance and monitor IEP progress. Develop appropriate lessons and materials for each student or student group taught. Evaluate and document student learning.
  • Collaborate with teachers, reading specialists and others to provide reading intervention to students who read Braille. Support student application of Braille skills during academic instruction.
  • Instruct student groups in the reading and writing of tactile graphics across multiple curriculum areas including math, science, social studies, and daily living.
  • Provide professional development and in-service training to staff, to include instruction in UEB and Nemeth Braille reading and writing, and various forms of Braille production to include tactile graphics production.
  • Participate in faculty, department meetings, committee work, special projects, and curriculum development. Assist in development of curriculum maps as needed, especially in the areas of Braille reading and writing. Attend training and implement skills acquired during professional development activities as required by Federal, State and FSDB mandates
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of teaching visually impaired students;
  • Ability to develop appropriate individual education plans;
  • Ability to identify and develop short term objectives into learning units;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Skilled in teaching to visually impaired students the use of braille, slate and stylus, handwriting, listening, visual and auditory access devices, and daily living skills
  • Ability to pass training and administer skills acquired during CPI and CPR;

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree and TVI Certification

If certification noted is not from Florida, upon appointment, shall obtain state of Florida certification within a reasonable period of time.

Preferred:

Master Degree in TVI, strong knowledge of Braille including, UEB, Nemeth, Tactile graphics, music Braille, Braille production techniques, and Braille instruction.

Sign Language Requirements:

Applicants who are selected for hire will be encouraged to learn American Sign Language.

Please note: FSDB provides education to acquire sign language skills.

Hiring Salary Range: 10-month position (190 Days): $53,366.25 - $57,242.33. This range is inclusive of verified experience. Employees shall receive compensation for higher education beyond a Bachelor’s Degree as noted below.

Master’s Degree: additional $2,400

Master’s 30, or 2nd Master’s Degree, or Education Specialist, or Doctorate Degree: additional $2,400

Employees may earn any combination of degrees and receive that amount. Only one degree in each category will apply.

Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm
