About the Park School

The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Brookline, MA dedicated to excellence in education. The cornerstone of Park's program is academic excellence, combining both high standards of scholarship and the encouragement of each child to develop to his or her greatest potential. The Park School also offers instrumental and vocal ensemble groups to students in grades four through eight. The Park School general music and elective program nurtures the love of music while laying a strong foundation for understanding musical concepts and developing musical skills. The program, in alignment with the NAfME Standards for Music Education, introduces students to the basic elements of music. These elements come to life through a diverse range of repertoire and learning experiences, which use speech, rhyme, games, singing, dance, movement, listening, stories, body percussion and musical instruments.

We seek a candidate to join our school community and work along with our music faculty to teach elementary and middle school level general music, music electives, and guitar ensemble. The incoming teacher will also direct the 4th -8th grade guitar ensemble groups. For this, we seek candidates with experience and a demonstrable talent for teaching music to both accomplished musicians and beginners. This teacher reports to the Head of the Upper Division. 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Teach the following courses:
    • 4th-8th grade Guitar Ensemble
    • 5th grade General Music
    • 6th-8th grade music elective 
    • 6th-8th grade drumline elective
  • Design, plan, and implement student-centered lessons which demonstrate a deep understanding of the academic discipline, curriculum, instruction, child development, and best practices, aligned with the goals and mission of The Park School
  • Establish and implement expectations for student safety and conduct; and procedures and routines, consistent with School policies
  • Assess student performance and engagement, including academics, behavior, and social-emotional needs, while communicating directly with students, colleagues, and families both formally and informally when necessary
  • Oversee and serve as primary contact between home and school as an advisor of a small group of students
  • Collaborate with all Park School employees as appropriate
  • Participate in and contribute to an adult learning community by engaging in meetings, discussions, committees, task forces, and professional development.
  • Complete administrative tasks and coverage duties as assigned (student supervision, attendance, reporting, documenting curriculum, etc.)
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice and performance
  • Ensure that respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion, social emotional learning, and academic excellence are emphasized as core values of the School
  • Participate in school community activities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Music or a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education required
  • Masters in Music or Music Education preferred
  • General music classroom teaching experience
  • Ability to teach guitar ensemble at both beginner and advance levels
  • Knowledge of digital music platforms helpful
  • Orff levels training, Kodaly training, and knowledge of conversational solfege helpful
  • Familiarity with the NAfME music education standards
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults
  • Strong communication skills, including experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents
  • Demonstrated experience working in a culturally diverse community
  • Motivation for and interest in professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning
  • Previous experience and/or interest in athletic coaching or supporting student-led clubs, organizations and events
