Brookline Public Schools is Hiring a Music Teacher (K-8) Near Brookline, MA

Job Description:

The Public Schools of Brookline seeks a Music Teacher for students in grades K-8. We are looking for a passionate and dedicated educator to inspire young musicians, foster creativity, and instill a love of music in our students. This position offers an exciting opportunity to inspire young musicians, nurture their talents, and cultivate a lifelong passion for music in our students. We are looking for a collaborative and innovative educator who is committed to providing high-quality music instruction and creating enriching musical experiences for students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching general music classes to kindergarten through 5th grade students
  • Teaching one or multiple 5th through 8th grade Conservatory classes, which may include Chorus, Guitar/Ukulele, Music Production, or Music Exploration.
  • Implementing a comprehensive music curriculum that meets the needs and interests of students in grades K-8, aligned with state standards and best practices in music education.
  • Providing engaging and interactive music instruction that incorporates a variety of teaching methods, musical genres, and technologies to enhance student learning and appreciation for music.
  • Teaching fundamental music concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and music notation, through a combination of individual, small group, and ensemble experiences.
  • Leading choral or instrumental ensembles, rehearsals, and performances, fostering teamwork, discipline, and artistic expression among students.
  • Assessing student progress through performance evaluations, music projects, and other formative and summative assessments, providing feedback to students and families to support growth and development.
  • Maintaining a positive and inclusive classroom environment that celebrates diversity, fosters creativity, and promotes respect, cooperation, and collaboration among students.
  • Actively participating in professional development opportunities, department meetings, and school-wide initiatives to continuously improve teaching practices and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong musicianship, pedagogical skills, and knowledge of music theory, history, and repertoire across various musical genres and cultures.
  • Proficiency in vocal and instrumental music instruction, including piano/keyboard skills and conducting experience.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and assess learning using a variety of methods
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Reflective practitioner with a growth mindset and a willingness to adapt to the evolving needs of students and the school community.
  • Massachusetts DESE teacher certification in Music
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • SEI endorsement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Previous experience teaching music to students including:
    • Teaching Takadimi or a similar music literacy system and solfege
    • Teaching elementary level general music class instruments, such as xylophones, recorders, etc.
    • Teaching singing and general music, music literacy, song games, and music and movement activities at the elementary level

    Reports To:

    The K-8 Music Teacher will report to the school building principal.

    • Identify your primary instrument(s), including voice, as well as any secondary instruments, and your proficiency level on each.
    • Describe any teaching experience you may have with chorus, guitar and/or ukulele, music technology, in particular using Digital Audio Workstations such as Soundtrap, Garage Band, Logic, etc., and any instrumental teaching experience you have.
