Description

The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to about 420 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory.

The Northwest School seeks an Upper School (grades 9-12) Humanities teacher. Candidates for this position should be prepared to teach in an interdisciplinary, integrated program where the study of English/Language Arts and the study of History/Social Studies are brought together in double-credit survey courses required for all students. Humanities instructors are also sometimes tasked with developing smaller special-topics seminars that are offered to our 12th grade students.

Qualifications


Essential Functions Include:

Teach the equivalent of two sections of Upper School Humanities, a double-credit course that meets daily.

Serve as an academic advisor to a group of students, guiding their social and academic progress.

Coordinate curricula with other teachers and grade level teachers.

Plan and teach a 2-week intensive course known as a Summit each year.

Participate fully in the life of the school, including:

  • Collaborate effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department
  • Engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development
  • Support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings; and
  • Know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student SEL, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

A strong pedagogical toolkit for student accessibility to curriculum and success in the classroom.

A commitment to the school's mission, values, and philosophy, as well as to a learning and working culture where all community members feel seen, valued, and heard.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree and 3-5 years of teaching experience.

We are especially interested in teachers with a background or expertise in teaching History and Social Studies, with a focus on non-U.S. contexts.

Salary is highly competitive with top independent schools in the region and commensurate with education and experience and includes all professional responsibilities of a teacher, both in the classroom and community contributions.
