The Lumistella Company is seeking aProduct Design Intern to ideate and develop new and continuing products expanding the “The Elf on the Shelf” product offering and the company’s portfolio of brands. Partnering with the Associate Principal Product Designer, the Product Design Intern will execute a cohesive vision that delivers magical product experiences grounded in consumer insights and Lumistella’s expanding North Pole lore. They will liaise with internal and external partners including packaging, licensing, production, product management, marketing, compliance, QA, sales, and factory teams. A design enthusiast deeply immersed in product and lifestyle trends, the Product Design Intern will deliver innovation while inspiring and challenging their design colleagues throughout the product development process.

The ideal Product Design Intern will bring:

  • Enrolment in a bachelor's degree program focused on industrial design, toy design, illustration, or related field.
  • Positive energy in a creative, fast paced, collaborative, and product centric environment.
  • Ability to pivot quickly depending on feedback and new information.
  • Problem solving and an idea generator persona looking to constantly challenge themselves and push beyond the status quo.
  • Storytelling and epic communication with prolific sketching, presenting, and writing abilities.
  • Mastery of design tools including Photoshop, Illustrator, and CAD software.
  • Knowledge of the manufacturing and production process with a focus on plastics and soft goods (paper goods and electronics is a plus).
  • Proven ability to think outside of the box delivering innovation grounded in consumer insights.
  • A passion for character design and world building.
  • Digital sculpting experience.
  • Knowledge of mechanism design (is a plus).
  • Experience designing digital products (is a plus).

Essential Job Functions and Duties of the Product Design Intern:

  • Concept ideation based in consumer insights and product development strategy.
  • Identifies social, market, and play pattern trends to inform design direction.
  • Provides clear and compelling visual communication and presentation of ideas to the team.
  • Fabricates three dimensional models proving concepts, functionality, and ergonomics.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop internal SWAGS, hit cost targets, and move through the stage gate process maintaining schedule.
  • Creates detailed technical specifications including CAD, turnarounds, dimensional drawings, PMS callouts, and material suggestions to guide vendors in production.
  • Communicates directly with factories during the pre-production and production phases of the development process moving from prototypes to final product.
  • Collaborates with internal departments including packaging, licensing, entertainment, sales, and marketing offering design support thought the product development process.
  • Embodies a fearless and passionate drive for excellence in all endeavors.
  • Protects company assets through the proper management of asset files and adherence to company policy with regard to information security and management.

Education requirements:

  • Enrolment in a bachelor's degree program focused on industrial design, toy design, illustration, or related field.
