PROGRAM SPECIALIST
CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES COORDINATOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
SCOPE OF WORK
The Children and Family Services Coordinator is a full-�me, non-exempt posi�on, repor�ng to the Manager of
Youth and Family Services at The LGBTQ Center Long Beach (The Center). In addi�on to administra�ve
func�ons (billing, documenta�on, and data tracking/repor�ng), the person in this role is responsible for
planning and implemen�ng ac�vi�es/services that promote the well-being of children and their
parents/caregivers. The Family Services Coordinator also assists in broader youth and family services at The
Center, including the Mentoring Youth Through Empowerment (MYTE) teen program.
This person serves as a mentor, tutor, and advocate for youth and families. This individual must have strong
knowledge of local community resources, outstanding writen and communica�on skills, experience working
with diverse popula�ons (par�cularly LGBTQ individuals), and excellent interpersonal skills. The person in this
role will be required to atend con�nuing educa�on, trainings, seminars, in-service trainings, and other
professional development opportuni�es to stay abreast of relevant literature and to maintain familiarity with
trends/changes in child development, and family services.
I: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A: Administra�ve
1. As needed, par�cipate in team/department, interdisciplinary and staff mee�ngs.
2. As needed, assist with the crea�on, revision, and delivery of program materials (i.e., intake
forms, brochures, flyers etc.).
3. Conduct outreach at family service agencies, schools, and special events.
4. Maintain an accurate/updated list of program par�cipants.
5. Monitor and track all ac�vi�es to provide accurate and �mely reports to Center board and
funders.
6. Collaborate with other programs at The Center, and other relevant partners to coordinate
appropriate client referrals.
7. As needed, assist with supervision of volunteers.
8. Plan, monitor and document programma�c expenses.
B: Direct Care
1. Triage service inquiries to determine the best fit.
2. Conduct screenings, intakes, and assessments for Youth Services programs.
3. As needed, make appropriate internal and external referrals.
4. As appropriate, provide emo�onal support and encouragement to children,
parents/caregivers, and families.
C: Program Development
1. Develop and facilitate curriculum for children and family-based groups, including
Transparent Families and Genera�on Q
2. Provide educa�on and training for parents/caregivers, faculty, and community members in
best prac�ces for suppor�ng LGBTQ youth.
3. As needed, assist in co-facilita�ng for other programma�c areas (i.e., Teen, TAY, School
Advocacy, etc.).
4. Develop events/ac�vi�es to engage, empower and educate children and families.
5. As needed, develop and update specific resources for parents/caregivers of LGBTQ
children.
6. As needed, provide referrals to address a spectrum of needs.
D: Linkage to Resources / Case Management
1. Create and maintain resource databases about educa�on, family planning,
fostering/adop�on, social welfare programs, and other services.
2. Develop rela�onships with tk-8 schools and child and family services agencies,
organiza�ons, and providers that leads to iden�fica�on and referral of LGBTQ children and
families.
3. As needed, connect children and families to LGBTQ competent and affirming
emergency/permanent housing, legal, medical, mental health, and other social services in the
Long Beach area.
