The House of the Good Shepherd is Hiring a Direct Care Worker - PIVOT Near Utica, NY

Sign on bonus $1000

Pay rate $19.00

Basic Function/Overall Responsibilities: To provide a safe, healthy environment that supports acquisition and utilization of pro-social skills for youth residing in the HGS RTA residential program. Direct Care workers provide guidance and coaching in behavior choices to youth by teaching coping, social, and vocational skills. Individuals in direct care positions may be required to work irregular hours, including nights, evenings, and weekends.

Principal Assigned Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that the facility is a safe, comfortable, and secure environment for staff, visitors, youth and families. 
  2. Supervise youth in their daily routine in accordance with agency policy and procedures as well as any individual Enhanced Supervision Plans.
  3. Participate in the implementation of engaging and diverse activity programming for youth in care. 
  4. Maintain a safe, clean and homelike environment for youth. This includes competing any household chores as assigned. 
  5. Implement behavior management techniques in a manner that reflects the agency's Sanctuary philosophy, Therapeutic Crisis Interventiontraining, and agency policy and procedure. 
  6. Execute intervention methods as defined by Individualized Crisis Management Plans and individualized treatment plans for youth in care. 
  7. Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and biweekly supervision. 
  8. Ensure completion of all written documentation as defined by program and agency policy and procedure. 
  9. Ensure that all program and agency policies and procedures are followed. 
  10. Successfully complete Medication Certification training and pass medication in accordance with physician's orders and record medications given according to agency guidelines and procedure.
  11. Participate in professional development trainings as assigned by supervisor.
  12. Successfully complete all required agency trainings as defined by program and agency policy.
  13. Successfully complete Van Certification training in order to transport youth on recreational outings and visitation. 
  14. Other related tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Relationships-Supervision and CoordinationDirect Care Workers are under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor assigned to the program and have regular supervision with that individual. Direct Care Workers must maintain a good working relationship with all program, clinical and support staff associated with the assigned work location. Direct Care staff are representatives of the program and agency while interfacing with youth's families and are expected to maintain positive and professional working relationships with those individuals. 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Minimum high school or equivalency diploma required; some higher education preferred.
  2. Experience working with juvenile justice involved youth highly desirable; sufficient maturity to work with and relate to youth required. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

  2. Ability to form positive relationships with youth. 
  3. Ability to understand and respond to youth's basic developmental needs.
  4. Ability to understand and follow agency policy and Trauma Informed Care orientation. 
  5. Understanding of basic needs and developmental issues of youth in a way that promotes growth and respects individuality.
  1. Asks age and developmentally appropriate questions and actively listens to youth’s responses.
  2. Develops a warm, positive, nurturing relationship with each youth.
  3. Follows mandated reporting requirements regarding child abuse and neglect.
  1. Practices infection control, including appropriate hand washing procedures.
  2. Uses knowledge of developmental milestones, assists children in participating at their individual level of interest and ability.
  3. Serves as a mentor for youth role modeling appropriate social behavior.
  4. Applies knowledge of youth development to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and environments.
  5. Adapts activities and environments to meet the special needs and situations of individual youth.
  6. Identifies developmentally appropriate behavior and reasonable expectations for youth’s behavior.
  7. Uses observation as a way to “get to know” youth –their interests and developmental levels.

16. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and maintains boundaries at all times. 

17. Valid New York state driver’s license, 1 year driving.
