The House of the Good Shepherd is Hiring a Behavior Support Worker - Full-time Near Utica, NY

Basic Function/Overall Responsibilities: To provide a safe, healthy environment that supports acquisition and utilization of pro-social skills for youth residing in the HGS residential program. Behavior Support workers provide guidance and coaching in behavior choices to youth by teaching coping, social, and vocational skills, individuals in child care positions may be required to work irregular hours, including nights, evenings, and weekends.

Principal Assigned Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the facility is a safe, comfortable, and secure environment for staff, visitors, youth and families.
  • Supervise youth in their daily routine in accordance with agency policy and procedures as well as any individual Enhanced Supervision Plans.
  • Recognize and actively intervene per the ICIVÍP as clients begin moving through the Crisis Cycle.
  • Ongoing evaluation and assessment of group dynamics and intervene with program modifications as necessary.
  • Model and support Child Care Staff interventions as outlined per the JCMP as clients move through the Crisis Cycle.
  • Manage all behaviors problems in a manner that reflects the agency's Sanctuary philosophy, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training, and agency policy and procedure.
  • Participate in the implementation of ongoing activity programs for youth in care as specified on the recreational calendar.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and homelike environment for youth. This includes competing any household chores as assigned.
  • Provide feedback regarding Individualized Crisis Management Plans and individualized treatment plans. Implement these plans as defined by the youth's Primary Therapist/treatment team.
  • Actively participate in incident deconstructions.
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and regular supervision.
  • Ensure completion of all written documentation as defined by program and agency policy and procedure.
  • Ensure that all program and agency policies and procedures are followed.
  • Successfully complete supervision of Self Administration of medication training, supervise self-administration of medication in accordance with physician's orders and record medications taken according to agency guidelines and procedure.
  • Participate in professional development trainings as assigned by supervisor.
  • Successfully complete all required agency trainings as defined by program and agency policy.
  • Successfully complete Van Certification training in order to transport youth on recreational outings and visitation.
  • Rotate between units and support programs in need.
  • Other related tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Education and Experience Requirements:
    • Minimum high school diploma or equivalency required, some higher education preferred.
    • Experience working with juvenile justice involved youth highly desirable; sufficient maturity to work with and relate to youth who have experienced trauma required.
