Job Description The Manager - Surgical Operations is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift and is responsible and accountable for directing and facilitating the flow of patient care activities of the department/area. This position manages individualized, goal-directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. This position is responsible for the delivery of quality care in the OR and other areas of surgical services while meeting standards as set forth by regulatory agencies, i.e., ACHA, CDC, CMS, and Department of Health including all documentation requirements. Promotes teamwork with all surgical team members and other departments. This position manages all resources effectively for the OR and Anesthesia. Responsibilities
Assists the divisional director in development, implementation and evaluation of on going service programs that assure quality nursing and patient care programs consistent with hospital mission.
Develop unit-based programs that provide a patient care delivery system that encourages professional practice of team members and results in quality, cost effective care outcomes.
Assure that patient/family care is provided within established standards.
Demonstrate clinical knowledge by providing patient care, acting as a clinical resource to team members and consultant to other departments in the areas of perioperative nursing.
Analyze clinical practice and identify opportunities to advance the quality, effectiveness and efficiency to realize improved outcomes using evidence based practice.
Identify clinical indicators to measure and evaluate quality care within unit. Assure that appropriate quality monitoring occurs on the unit and that findings are used to improve practice and reduce potential for patient complications.
Collaborate with all members of the healthcare team to facilitate patient and family needs.
Facilitate daily huddles to ensure that all team members are focused on the needs for the day, identification of any barriers and opportunities to improve the patient experience and workflow.
Monitors/maintains unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting and hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
Works collaboratively with the Educator(s) to ensure all clinical competencies are met.
Accurately identifies real/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions with follow through and communication.
Consults with patients/families through primary nurse request, direct family request, and/or direct assessment of patient/family response to hospitalization. Assesses patient/significant other survey responses regarding nursing care and services.
Responsible for ongoing development of staff and unit specific patient care programs.
Is responsible for department's operational excellence; assures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.
Manage team members which include orientation, development and evaluation of personnel, and monitoring the provision of delivering quality services. Participates in the recruiting, interviewing and selecting of team members following policies, guidelines and applicable laws. Evaluates their performance relative to job goals and requirements. Provides coaching to staff, recommends in-service education programs, and ensures adherence to internal policies and standards.
Is responsible for the fiscal management of department; assures proper utilization of organization's financial resources.
Effectively communicates departmental, organization, and industry information to staff.
5 years RN experience as an operating room Required and 1-3 years Management experience required (will consider charge nurse experience) Required.
Registered Nurse Licensed Upon Hire Required and BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Upon Hire Required.
CNOR within 6 months Required.
Maintains knowledge and skills required to perform as a professional registered nurse as well as those specific to surgical services and the operating room.
Knowledge of human resource management; program development; fiscal management skills; and familiarity with regulatory and accrediting agency standards.
Ability and knowledge of standard business computer software programs
Ability to foster teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to read and understand the English language.
Proven ability to facilitate and manage operational change while maintaining optimal patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
Strength in collaborative relationships with other departments and/or facilities.
Effective working in a matrix organization.
