Position: Prevention Educator: Youth Focus

Hours: 40 hours / week; Primarily weekdays, occasional evenings and weekends; non-exempt position

Reports to: Co-Director of Services II

Location: Advocacy Center/ Confidential Shelter

Compensation: $22/hour, generous paid time off, 100% employer paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employee and dependents, 10 paid holidays, retirement plan options with up to 3% employer match after 1-year of employment, FSA/HSA

Who is The Harbor

We are Clatsop County’s primary community-based advocacy service for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Established in 1976, our services have evolved to include a 24-hour crisis line, responding in person to calls from law enforcement and health care providers for in-person advocacy, a drop-in advocacy center and youth center, prevention education, confidential shelter, and wrap around services such as support groups, legal support, and mental health services. We are here to support all survivors with strengths-based services that promote self-determination and hope.

Position Purpose

The Youth-Focused Prevention Educator is responsible for coordinating and facilitating activities associated with sexual violence prevention in local schools and at youth-focused events, including tabling at community-based events, creating and facilitating prevention workshops at youth programs such as the Q Center or GSA groups, teaching prevention education classes at local high and middle schools, facilitating a youth-led prevention podcast, and organizing a youth-led peer advocacy program to raise awareness and prevention of sexual violence issues within Clatsop County.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate a youth leadership committee to steer The Harbor’s prevention strategies
  • Develop and nurture relationships with key individuals and organizations in the community
  • Provides in-the-moment emotional support to survivors who disclose that they are survivors of sexual violence, and facilitate a warm hand-off to an advocate and/or additional resources as needed
  • In collaboration with the Community-Focused Prevention Educator, coordinate a community needs and resource assessment
  • In collaboration with the Community-Focused Prevention Educator organize a community-wide prevention advisory committee or coalition; or implement another strategy that encourages community ownership of sexual violence prevention and social change
  • Maintain professional competency by attending trainings and accessing other mechanisms for acquiring and maintaining basic/baseline sexual violence prevention training and developing new knowledge and skills associates with sexual violence prevention and sexual health promotion
  • Some travel to meetings and trainings as required by grant funders
  • Submit all required reports and other documentation in a timely and complete manner
  • Develop and implement youth-focused sexual violence prevention strategies including bystander intervention strategies, school sexual violence prevention education classes, and tabling at events to raise awareness of The Harbor and prevalence of sexual violence in the community
  • Organize a youth-led peer advocacy program with middle and/or high schools
  • Facilitate a youth-led prevention podcast
  • Oversee the assessment and evaluation of the sexual violence prevention strategies and other sexual violence prevention work

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of one year of experience working in the sector of sexual violence
  • Strong computer technology skills, and able to learn new technology systems and implement within scope of duties
  • Valid driver’s license
  • One or more years of experience creating (Canva, Powerpoint) and facilitating presentations/public speaking
  • Experience working with and supporting youth
  • Experience in community outreach/organizing/mobilization
  • Personal values compatible with those of The Harbor, including a commitment to anti-oppression work (DEIJ), social justice, and social change
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to project needs
  • Independent, self-motivated worker
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Openness to learning new concepts and approaches

Desirable Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of public health principles
  • Experience teaching sexuality education
  • Experience with primary prevention (any type or prevention will qualify- sexual assault, smoking, suicide, bullying, etc.)
  • Experience in program planning and coordination
  • Experience in community assessment
  • Experience with program evaluation
  • Spanish speaking

Work Environment

The candidate must be able to work under tight deadlines and high-stress conditions, and should be capable of lifting at least 25 pounds, climbing stairs, kneeling, standing, walking, being active with young children, operating a vehicle, and moving throughout our building, shelter, partner agency locations, and other sites as needed.

As the atmosphere in a domestic violence agency can shift rapidly from stable to highly charged, all employees must remain flexible, calm, and creative.
