The Greater Boston Food is Hiring a Communications Manager Near Boston, MA

Job Title: Communications Manager

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Reports to: Director of Communications

Date: January 2024


Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Communications, and working closely across the organization, the Communications Manager is responsible for helping to execute and support the strategic development of communications. Efforts will focus on content development and writing and management of communications for external audiences, and content for direct marketing or major gift fundraising purposes. This position will consistently abide by GBFB’s brand, desired positioning, tone, and messaging.


Position Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help to enhance GBFB’s reputation by creating clear, authentic, compelling, and differentiating content and messaging for various audiences to build awareness about hunger across Eastern Massachusetts.
  • Manage the development and execution of the communications editorial content calendar and process to capture and repurpose content and stories across distribution channels for various audiences.
  • As part of content management responsibilities, research, capture, interview and write stories of our clients, partners and donors that will be published on our organization’s website, blog, donor and research reports, and our quarterly Harvest newsletter which is distributed to our donor base and repurposed for additional external stakeholders such as our food distribution partners and legislators.
  • Responsible for writing and executing our quarterly Harvest newsletter stories which is distributed to our donors and repurposed for additional external stakeholders such as our food distribution partners and legislators.
  • Provide writing communications support to Development team on events, campaigns, and other projects.
  • Support the successful rollout and execution of our new and existing messaging.
  • Manage external communications vendors and freelancers as needed.
  • Work closely with creative vendors and team in-house to ensure appropriate usage and/or creation of GBFB creative assets, while maintaining brand style and consistency across all materials.
  • Work closely with the Digital Marketing Manager to support GBFB’s web content strategy, email marketing and social media content strategy while ensuring alignment with GBFB’s PR and marketing strategy, brand, and messaging architecture.
  • Collaborate with Direct of Marketing on the planning and execution of the annual Resource trip to capture client stories at partner agencies and mapping out strategy for use of client stories across platforms.
  • Work in close coordination and collaboration across Advancement and the broader GBFB team.
  • Serve as the Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs liaison for donor recognition fulfillment in collaboration with the donor and corporate relations teams.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications, manage collateral requests for fundraising, GBFB teams, and supporter engagement.
  • Coordinate donor stewardship in collaboration with Development, Marketing and Donor Services including print and digital stewardship and gift acknowledgment.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with individuals across our organization to help translate business strategies, highlight projects and initiatives across various communications platforms.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for key functions and activities of the communications manager role and other communications team processes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Skills & Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in strategic communications and content management.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Proven ability to write persuasively.
  • Advanced writing skills with ability to quickly produce approachable, relevant copy that is reflective of GBFB’s culture, values, goals, mission, and brand.
  • Strong proactive communication and project management skills.
  • Experience fostering relationships across business functions.
  • Attention to detail, highly organized and a keen sense of deadlines.
  • Experience in maintaining editorial calendars and deadline protocols.
  • Experience in strategic communications across audiences and platforms.
  • Basic html, email, and use of Adobe Creative suite.
  • Proven writer with at 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience plus related bachelor’s degree (Communications, English/Literature, or related discipline) preferred.
  • Ability to write according to the AP Stylebook.
  • Strong project management skills, with ability to manage multiple tasks with frequently changing requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with people across the organization.
  • Genuine appreciation of GBFB’s mission and the ability to communicate it.
  • Demonstrates the required digital competencies that result in the effective usage of the full range of digital technologies at GBFB.


Physical Demands

  • Ability to work in a remote or in a traditional office environment.
  • Ability to sit for up to 3 hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.


Work Environment

This job is performed indoors in an office environment.


Travel Required

  • Yes. Travel to partner agencies to gather client stories. Travel to conferences if applicable.

Valid drivers license and access to a reliable, insured, personal vehicle is required.
