Our project-based curriculum encourages creative problem-solving, collaborative teamwork, and independent thought. GMS educates girls* during a pivotal time in their lives. Students develop self-knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills supported by a staff highly attuned to their changing emotional and social needs. *At GMS, “girls” refers to cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth, and any girl-identified youth.

Mission

The Girls’ Middle School educates girls at a crucial time in life. We create an inclusive environment where academic growth is nourished. A GMS girl discovers her strengths and expresses her voice while respecting the contributions of others.

The Position

The Girls’ Middle School is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Communications Manager beginning immediately. The Communications Manager reports to the Head of School and works closely with other administrative leaders. The Communications Manager will serve as GMS’s “chief storyteller” – developing and delivering key messages, ensuring consistency across all communications, and reinforcing the mission and goals of the School.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Envision and craft compelling communications about GMS and deliver these messages effectively across many platforms – social media, website, Advancement and Admission materials, school newsletters, the Annual Report, etc.
  • Serve as the primary writer, editor, photographer, and creative director for internal and external communications and marketing efforts. Ensure consistency across platforms, audiences, and vehicles.
  • Create, plan, and execute a Communications strategy for GMS. Identify metrics and measure success in order to inform strategy, tactics, and messaging.
  • Collaborate with the Head of School in crafting oral and written messaging, including internal and external emails, monthly HOS updates, and presentations.
  • Partner with the Director of Advancement and Director of Admission to produce collateral, event materials, marketing campaigns, video and web-based content.
  • Manage the school’s website (www.girlsms.org), family portals, social media presence, weekly internal e-newsletter, style guide, and online calendars.
  • Attend and assist in the execution of major school events, including evening and weekend Admission and Advancement events as requested.

Key Qualifications and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Marketing and/or communications experience required.
  • Independent school or non-profit experience preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills. Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite, Finalisite, and social media platforms. Familiarity with SmugMug, Adobe, Constant Contact, Canva, Hootsuite, Raiser’s Edge, Veracross, YouTube, and emergent technologies a plus.
  • Digital photography and graphic design skills. Video production experience a plus.
  • A cooperative team approach with colleagues and other community members, including parents, students, Board members, and alums.
  • Sound judgment relating to confidential projects, personnel, school, or student matters.
  • Spanish language proficiency a plus.

This is a full-time, year-round, in-person position. On occasion, some job responsibilities may require evening and weekend work.

Equity, inclusion, and belonging are at the heart of our mission. The Girls’ Middle School was founded on the core belief that diverse and inclusive communities are strong communities. We are committed to creating a school culture that welcomes all aspects of each individual’s identity. We welcome applications from those with experience outside the educational field. We are actively seeking individuals who value equitable education and are committed to fostering an environment of belonging for our diverse student body.

The Girls’ Middle School is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer committed to a policy of equal treatment and opportunity in every aspect of its hiring and promotion process without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, partnership status, gender and/or gender identity or expression, marital, parental or familial status, national origin, ethnicity, veteran or military status, age, disability, or any other legally protected basis.

The candidate must be authorized to work in the United States. GMS does not support applications for work visas.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Comprehensive Employee Health Benefits (full medical, dental & vision coverage). Retirement matching.
  • Access to engaging and personalized professional development
  • The Girls’ Middle School uses a competitive salary scale. The salary for this position ranges from $80,000 to $110,000, commensurate with experience.
