The Epiphany School is Hiring a Garden Program Assistant Director Near Boston, MA
Epiphany is an independent school dedicated to providing excellent, tuition-free education to young people of all faiths, from economically disadvantaged families from Boston. We have a comprehensive garden program that takes place in our 1,000 square foot tropical greenhouse, 24 raised beds, pollinator garden, and rain garden. The Garden Program Assistant Director is a year-round position that focuses on cultivating the gardens and the garden program, involving all children, families, and staff at our school in growing food, cooking, working towards food justice, and coming together as a community. The Assistant Director collaborates extensively with the Director on teaching cooking and gardening classes for middle schoolers, teaching garden time for early learners, developing garden-based learning curriculum for all ages, employing youth over the summers, expanding and maintaining the gardens and greenhouse, and so much more.
Core Responsibilities -- to be completed in collaboration with the Garden Program Director Teaching Fellow
- Green Club: Plan, lead teach, and develop curriculum for our cooking and gardening elective, teaching or co-teaching 4-6 classes a week for students 5th-8th grade, throughout the school year
- Early Learning Center: Plan and lead weekly Garden Time for toddlers and preschoolers, 1-2 classes per week
- Academic Garden-Based Learning: Collaborate with middle school teachers to integrate garden-based learning into Epiphany curriculum, across grades and subjects, with a special focus on science curriculum and teaching
- Youth Employment: Hire, train, and supervise 4-6 youth working in the gardens for 5-6 weeks in the summer
- Garden and greenhouse maintenance: Co-lead design and maintenance of the greenhouse, vegetable garden, pollinator garden, rain garden, compost system, sheds, and tools
- Collaborate with chefs to ensure garden produce is included in school menu and coordinate about Green Club
- Engage families/parents/staff in the garden program by inviting them to be guest chefs, seeking input on crops, gathering food stories, inviting them to have their own plots in our garden, and seeking frequent feedback
- Grow and give away over 1,000 seedlings to wider Boston gardening community each spring
- Recruit, schedule, and lead volunteers in the gardens and greenhouse
- Coordinate with Operations Director to manage contractors, employees, and volunteers who mow lawns, remove leaves, maintain trees, weed border beds around properties
- Order, pick up, and coordinate procurement of seeds, plants, supplies, kitchen implements, tools, and everything needed to keep garden program thriving
- Assist with various duties at the Middle School and Early Learning Center (for example: front desk or lunch duty)
Qualifications
- 2 or more years of professional experience in education (lead teaching, curriculum development); experience with garden education and teaching preferred
- 1 or more years of professional experience with farm or garden management
- Bachelors or Masters degree preferred but not required

- Compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience
