The Door - A Center of Alternatives is Hiring a Learning Strategist Near Bronx, NY

Overview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for over 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The Door’s Career and Education Program is designed to help a young person assess, set, and obtain their educational and career goals. It specifically allows a young person to craft a personalized life plan defining the steps he/she will take to achieve those goals while developing the necessary skills for future life success and independence. The Learning Strategist will be responsible for all aspects of our infused career and education class. In this capacity, this person will develop program curriculum and facilitation instruction that incorporates HHSE (High School Equivalency) preparation and work readiness skills development to enable youth to achieve their education and career goals.


Responsibilities
:

  • Assist the Supervisor of Education Services in leading instructional team projects and initiatives including but not limited to curriculum design and selection, test coordination, program exhibitions, and instructional resources allocation for HSE (High School Equivalency), and resource center programs
  • Facilitate all instructional aspects of an infused HSE and Class instruction
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the NYS GED Test, and NYS Common Core Standards
  • Provide differentiated instruction to a wide range of learners
  • Plan lessons and projects that are outcome based to develop skills necessary for HSE preparation
  • Serve as member of curriculum development team to help build a lesson plan bank that prepares students for success on the GED
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth development
  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team to increase our services to specific youth populations and to provide the appropriate plans for young people
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction within and outside of the classroom setting
  • Administer multiple forms of assessment, including summative and formative assessments, and use these assessments to inform lesson planning and day to day instructional strategies
  • Collaborate with the instructional team to respond to the instructional needs of the individual students, to plan lessons, projects, and student exhibitions
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is stimulating, supports individual and group learning and is rigorous and nurturing
  • Develop and implement teaching strategies to assist struggling youth in literacy, comprehension, and writing skills
  • Develop and maintain student portfolios, documenting milestones, and other supporting interim achievements
  • Maintain accurate student records and all student contacts
  • Collect and maintain documentation of services and outcomes for internal and external use
  • Attending all relevant meetings, training courses, workshops, and outside events
  • Arrange trips to cultural events and experiences
  • Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor and/or director


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required, Master is preferred
  • Minimum of four years classroom teaching experience working with high-risk adolescent population
  • Experience working in Youth Development
  • Experience in curriculum design and implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and challenge students to achieve a high level of performance through rigorous academic performance
  • Knowledgeable of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Mandarin strongly preferred

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday to Friday, 35 hours a week, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
