The Discovery School of Jacksonville is Hiring a Toddler Associate Teacher Near Jacksonville, FL

Toddler Associate Teacher
Position: Toddler Associate Teacher
Reports to: Toddler Program Coordinator, Director of Lower School; Head of School
Location: The Discovery School, 102 15th St., Jacksonville Beach, FL, 32250
About the School
The Discovery School is a private, non-profit school that offers a unique educational experience through a gradual evolution from pure Montessori, to a blended curriculum, to pure International Baccalaureate (IB) over the course of the child's academic career, serving children ages 18-months through eighth grade.
Through a progressive and internationally-minded framework, students receive a firm foundation in academic skills and participate in a wide variety of enrichment opportunities from a dedicated and caring faculty. Students in our toddler and primary program engage in learning in a Montessori prepared environment with Montessori trained teachers. Students in our elementary school are a part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). Our middle school seeks to challenge students with academic rigor in a low-pressure environment.
Who we are looking for

Our culture is about having the freedom and latitude to discover your passions and thrive on encouraging this mindset. The Toddler Associate teacher should have a deep love of and respect for our students and believe that Discovery School students are:
  • Explorers pursuing their passions
  • Spirited and reflective risk-takers
  • Peacemakers
  • Resourceful and persevering innovators
  • Leaders who inspire others to discover and act on what is possible
  • Responsible, courageous world citizens
Summary of Position
The Discovery School Associate Toddler Teacher understands and promotes the school’s mission, vision, core values, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. With the Lead Teacher’s guidance, the management of children in the Outdoor Environment and the preparation and maintenance of the Outdoor Environment is an Associate’s primary responsibility. Assisting the Lead Teacher with management and maintenance of the Indoor Environment is another essential responsibility for the Associate Teacher. Associates are responsible for student hygiene and diapering.
It is important that the expectations of both the Lead Teacher and the Associate are consistent. The Lead Teacher and Associate will work together to create a peaceful atmosphere, and the Associate Teacher must become familiar with and imitate the Lead Teacher’s model. The Associate is responsible for communication that supports an understanding of the school’s program, developing positive relationships within the school community, and protecting the privacy and confidentiality of each student and family in the school community.
The toddler environment consists of an indoor space, a covered patio space, and an outdoor space. A significant portion of the Associate Teacher’s school day is spent in an outdoor space, and a portion of the Associate’s school day is spent indoors. This position requires the employee to spend the majority of work hours actively attending to young children. This will include but is not limited to, standing, bending at the waist, kneeling, sitting, and lifting.
All staff members are expected to be prompt at morning arrival. The Associate Teacher will manage all aspects of the Classroom, and supervise a substitute teacher, in the event that the Lead Teacher is absent.
Normal Hours
  1. Monday through Friday when school is in session, 8:00 am – 3:30 pm.
  2. Additional hours may be required and deemed necessary by the Director of Lower School, and Head of School.
  3. Associate Teachers may be required to work on days when students are not in (full) attendance to support the Toddler Program and other programs. These days will be confirmed just prior to these events.
  4. Associate Teachers may also be asked to work evenings to provide childcare to support the Toddler program and/or other programs.
Assist the Lead Teacher as directed in
  1. The preparation, care, and maintenance of the environment, i.e., maintaining a safe, orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition.
  2. The preparation and maintenance of classroom materials. Regarding "taking work home" (including pet care), it is the responsibility of the Lead Teacher, rather than the Associate, to make arrangements for tasks that are not able to be completed within the Associate's regular work hours, i.e. Associate's work outside their regular work hours requires prior approval by the Director of Lower School or the Head of School.
  3. Working with individual and small groups of children.
  4. Supervising students including managing snack/lunch, supply refills, assisting an injured child, dressing/undressing children, and diapering/toileting.

  7. Is required to attend full Staff Meetings and any other meetings as and when requested.
  8. Assists with other projects, programs, and planning as assigned or requested by the school's leadership.
  9. Shares questions and observations with the Lead Teacher.
  10. Establishes positive relationships with students, which, while recognizing the differing roles of adult and child, are characterized by mutual respect and goodwill.
  11. Notifies the Director of Lower School immediately of professional difficulties with children, parents, or staff, and personal difficulties that may affect the Associate Teacher's role/responsibilities.
  12. Protects the peace and privacy of the children at work. Constantly observes the children and encourages them towards independence and confidence through work. Once a child is engaged, the Associate's job is to 'disappear' and move to the next task.
  13. Collaborates with colleagues and the school's leadership in the design and implementation of innovation within the context of the school's overall program and its mission.
  14. Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, respect for all persons, and an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender issues and diversity.
