About the School
The Discovery School is a private, non-profit school that offers a unique educational experience through a gradual evolution from pure Montessori, to a blended curriculum, to pure International Baccalaureate (IB) over the course of the child's academic career, serving children ages 18-months through eighth grade.
Through a progressive and internationally-minded framework, students receive a firm foundation in academic skills and participate in a wide variety of enrichment opportunities from a dedicated and caring faculty. Students in our toddler and primary program engage in learning in a Montessori prepared environment with Montessori trained teachers. Students in our elementary school are a part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). Our middle school seeks to challenge students with academic rigor in a low-pressure environment.

Summary of Position
The Discovery School Team Associate Teacher, Afterschool & Summer Assistant understands and promotes the school’s mission, vision, core values, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. The Team Associate Teacher, Afterschool & Summer Assistant is responsible for effectively running and supporting the school inside and outside of classrooms as needed, and support in the afterschool environment. The Team Associate Teacher, Afterschool & Summer Assistant is flexible and adapts to the needs of the environment in which they work, including filling in for positions when individuals are absent.
The Team Associate Teacher, Afterschool & Summer Assistant is responsible for communication that supports an understanding of the school’s program, develops positive relationships within the school community, and protects the privacy and confidentiality of each student and family in the school community. The Team Associate Teacher, Afterschool & Summer Assistant is expected to be prompt with a cheerful disposition and a love of children.
This job requires the employee to spend the majority of work hours actively attending to young children. This will include but is not limited to, standing, bending at the waist, kneeling, sitting, and lifting.
Normal Hours
  1. Monday through Friday that school is in session from approximately 9:30 am - 5:30 pm (or when complete) for Aftercare.
  2. Other hours as required and deemed necessary by the Program Coordinator(s), the Auxiliaries Coordinator and/or the Head of School, including Early Release Days when Aftercare is provided.
  3. Monday through Friday when Summer programs are in session, approx. 8:30 am - 4:00 pm.
Assist the Lead Teacher as directed in:
  1. The preparation, care, and maintenance of the environment, i.e., maintaining a safe, orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition.
  2. The preparation and maintenance of classroom materials. Regarding "taking work home" (including pet care), it is the responsibility of the Lead Teacher, rather than the Associate, to make arrangements for tasks that are not able to be completed within the Associate's regular work hours, i.e. Associate's work outside his/her regular work hours requires prior approval by the Director of Lower School or the Head of School.
  3. Working with individual and small groups of children.
  4. Supervising students includes managing snack/lunch, supply refills, assisting an injured child, dressing/undressing children, and diapering/toileting as necessary. 
  5. Independent supervision of children while in the Outdoor Environment.
  6. Helping to maintain strong relationships with the parents, characterized by mutual respect and goodwill.
  7. Helping with students' observation and maintaining current, accurate classroom records.
  8. Assist with the execution of Emergencies and Emergency Drills per the established protocol.
The Associate Teacher:
  1. Immediately corrects and reports safety issues, accidents, and incidents to the Lead Teacher and the Director of Student Experience.
  2. Is directly responsible for cleaning the environment according to Lead Teacher directives and storing all classroom supplies properly.
  3. Monitors and assists children with work, self-care, and social relationships/interactions with peers.
  4. Per Lead Teacher's direction, assists with arrivals and dismissals as required and with strict adherence to Emergency Contact protocol, including completing electronic attendance records according to policy.
  5. Is responsible for the safety of the children left in his/her charge until dismissed to a responsible adult. No child will ever be left unsupervised. Teachers are responsible for the appropriate treatment and well-being of all children, based on respect and consistent with the teachings of Montessori. 
  6. Models the Lead Teacher's method of interacting with children and adults, per Discovery's policies, including respectful communication and positive directives and phrasing. 
  7. Is required to attend Full Staff Meetings and any other meetings as and when requested.
  8. Assists with other projects, programs, and planning as assigned or requested by the school's leadership.
  9. Shares questions and observations with the Lead Teacher.
  10. Establishes positive relationships with students, which, while recognizing the differing roles of adult and child, are characterized by mutual respect and goodwill.
  11. Notifies the Director of Lower School, and Head of School immediately of professional difficulties with children, parents, or staff, and personal difficulties that may affect the Associate Teacher's role/responsibilities.
  12. Protects the peace and privacy of the children at work. Constantly observes the children and encourages them towards independence and confidence through work. Once a child is engaged, the Associate's job is to 'disappear' and move to the next task.
  13. Collaborates with colleagues and the school's leadership in the design and implementation of innovation within the context of the school's overall program and its mission.
  14. Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, respect for all persons, and an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender issues and diversity.
  15. Participates in school functions, including but not limited to Open Houses, Curriculum Nights, Parent Orientations, Fall & Spring Festivals, Board/PTO Community Meetings.
  16. Is imbued with Discovery's Be Our Guest attitude.
Accountabilities for Team Associate Teacher, Afterschool & Summer Assistant:
  1. Supports the effective management of the school entrance, as well as representing the school to internal & prospective families and community contacts.
  2. Is responsible for ensuring all students are safely escorted to their classrooms/camps, following all attendance procedures. This includes maintaining rosters for all camps, and utilizing the Active Camp Registration portal to monitor camp activities.
  3. Supports the management of the daily operations of a professional school environment, inclusive of but not limited to answering phones, taking messages, and supporting all necessary communications relating to daily afterschool and summer camp business and student safety.
  4. Supports the administrative operations.
  5. Provides coverage for camps as needed.
  6. Safely escorts morning campers to their afternoon camp session, including supervising lunch for those campers.
  7. Coordinates and supports the Auxiliaries Coordinator to create a robust summer camp program.
  8. Other duties as assigned by the Auxiliaries Coordinator during times of summer camp.
Afterschool Accountabilities:
  1. Is responsible for the safety and well-being of the children left in their charge, within the classrooms and on the playground, based on respect and consistent with the teachings of Montessori, until dismissed to a responsible adult. 
  2. Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all persons and an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender differences and diversity.
  3. Prepares and cleans the environment for Toddler, Primary, or Elementary/Middle School students.
  4. Collaborates and communicates with all Lead Teachers. 
  5. Coordinates activities of interest to students.
  6. Monitors and assists children with work, self-care, and social relationships/interactions with peers.
  7. Assists with arrivals and dismissals as required and with strict adherence to Emergency Contact protocol, including completing electronic attendance records according to policy.
  8. Establishes positive relationships with students, which, while recognizing the differing roles of adult and child, are characterized by mutual respect and goodwill. 
  9. Supervises students in their care. No child should ever be left unsupervised either inside or outside the classroom, except when directed by the teacher.
  10. Phrases directives positively when speaking with the children.
  11. Reports all accidents/incidents at once. Prepares a written report and makes the Auxiliaries Coordinator and/or Lead Teacher aware of the accident/incident.
  12. Attends full staff meetings and any other meetings as and when requested.
  13. Shares questions and observations with the Auxiliaries Coordinator.
  14. Notifies the Auxiliaries Coordinator and/or Head of School immediately of personal or professional difficulties with children, parents, or staff.
  15. Supervising students includes managing snack/lunch, supply refills, assisting an injured child, dressing/undressing children, and diapering/toileting as necessary. 
  16. Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all.
Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma, Bachelor's degree in education a bonus but not required.
  2. Experience with children between 18 months and 36 months is preferred but not required.
  3. Experience with Montessori and/or progressive learning approaches is preferred but not required. 
  4. Versed in the integration of technology as a tool enabling learning.
  5. Exceptionally strong interpersonal skills. 
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to engage in a collaborative community. 
  7. Adept at communicating Discovery’s story to various constituencies.
