We are seeking candidates who are eager to adopt and champion our mission and values.Recreation Program Coordinator - Aquatics & SafetyUnder the direction of the Recreation Supervisor of Aquatics, this position will enhance the quality of life for all residents and foster individual and community in all aspects of physical, mental, social and environmental through recreational opportunities.
 
Programming Focus

Assist in developing, administering and conducting a comprehensive aquatic and safety programs in a safe environment for Plymouth residents of all ages. This position will be responsible for coordinating and assisting with recreation programs and special events including but not limited to: supervising, training and hiring staff, budgeting and providing onsite assistance. Programs may include: aquatics, safety, rentals, special events, and others as needed. 

This position is responsible for supervision, training and coordination of aquatic and safety programming in a pool environment. This consists of 40% office administration, 25% site supervision at the pool and 35% conducting and executing programs/events at the pool.

Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

General Recreation Programming

Assist in planning, designing, initiating and supervising recreation programs, activities and services that provide high quality leisure opportunities for all segments of Plymouth’s population. Frequently analyze and evaluate recreational opportunities to ensure that we are effectively meeting the needs and interests of our constituents. 

  • Propose, design, implement new programs, initiatives and events.
  • Supervise assigned programs.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and service quality to ensure outcomes are met.
  • Implement program modifications to enhance the service and/or ensure quality experiences.
  • Work cooperatively with department staff, city staff, schools and other agencies to establish innovative joint partnerships, creative recreation programs and entrepreneurial services. 
  • Purchase, distribute, inventory and maintain recreation program supplies and equipment.

Respond to public inquiries and communicate departmental procedures, programs and other necessary information in an accurate, timely and professional manner.

  • Ensure that program information is publicized and promoted effectively.
  • Make program operational decisions in a timely manner (i.e. cancellations, class size adjustments). 
  • Handle complaints and inquiries in a courteous, polite and professional manner.

Administrative

Under the direction of the recreation supervisor, record data for a variety of reports or as directed for correspondence and documentation to ensure data driven quality programs and services. 

Programs/Staff:

  • Collect and organize data from programs, researches trends and potential opportunities 
  • Conduct staff orientation, training, and evaluates staff performance based on policies and procedures
  • Work with the Recreation Supervisor to collaborate with local business and deliver sponsorship opportunities or donation requests.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, and supervising of temporary staff. 

 Budget:

  • Responsible for implementing individual program budgets.
  • Monitor monthly budget reports and recommends necessary adjustments to meet program goals.
  • Maintain necessary records, statistics and reports to track and document budget status.

Assist with other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth’s CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council’s strategic priorities.
  • Must be a current student of or have a degree in Parks, Recreation and Leisure studies, Education or related field.
  • One year of experience supervising aquatic facilities or aquatics programs (i.e. swimming lessons, beaches or indoor pool facilities, aquatic staff)
  • Current American Red Cross or equivalent Water Safety Instructor certification or having possessed the certification within the past five years and the ability to obtain a current certification within 6 months of hire 
    and/or 
    Current American Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard Certification or having possessed the certification within the past five years and the ability to obtain a current certification within 6 months of hire. 
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR & First Aid Instructor Certificate (or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire). 
  • Ability to work day, evening and weekend hours.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. 
Desired Qualifications
  • 2 years of experience supervising aquatic facilitates or aquatics programs 
  • 2 - 3 years of experience with the following:
    • Planning and implementing training schedules for staff
    • Developing schedules for staff and programs
    • Leading recreation programs
  • Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification and/or Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Physical activities very frequently required to perform the job: standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction), handling objects (grasping, turning or otherwise using hands or hand), repetitive hand motion and stationary desk work with neck bent forward. 
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or carry items weighing from 0 to 24 pounds. Items lifted and/or carried include event supplies, programs and equipment. 
  • This job requires working outdoors, working indoors, supervising non-regular employees, working with chemicals, working near fumes and/or vapors and driving a personal vehicle or city-owned vehicle to perform essential functions.
