CITY OF OKLAHOMA CITY is Hiring a MASTER MECHANIC Near Oklahoma City, OK

NOTE: The normal starting salary for this position is $20.81/hourly. A higher salary may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City's step placement policy.

Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

This posting is located in the Fleet Services Division of the Utilities Department. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies, including vacancies in other departments, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Due to the nature of the work performed, the Master Mechanic must have previously acquired knowledge and skills related to automotive service excellence prior to assuming the duties of this position. The employee is primarily responsible for diagnosing equipment malfunctions, estimating repair costs, writing service orders and providing other employees with on-the-job training related to automotive repairs and maintenance. Essential job functions include applying principles and knowledge of automotive mechanics in order to diagnose and provide service for various equipment malfunctions and performing major repairs of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment using own knowledge of mechanics, methods, tools and techniques. The Master Mechanic exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment and must be able to effectively convey technical information to inquiring City employees and co-workers. Assignments are reviewed by the supervisor periodically through inspection of records and physical observation of work performed.
 

VETERANS PREFERENCE 

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

  • Skill in providing employees with verbal instructions and physical demonstration of automotive repairs and maintenance.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical sketches, diagrams and instructions.
  • Ability and skill in preparing accurate cost estimates for required repairs and services.
  • Ability to assume responsibility for work performed and decisions made.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and keep up-to-date on Master Mechanic's areas of specialization.
  • Possession of a current Master Mechanic Certification.
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma State Class "A" Commercial Driver License.
NOTE: Employee must provide own hand tools.
NOTE: This position may be underfilled as a MECHANIC in the event the selected candidate does not possess a valid Oklahoma State Class "A" Commercial Driver License and/or a Master Mechanic Certification. The pay range for the MECHANIC is 414 or $18.17 to $28.11 per hour.
NOTE: The employee will be required to possess or obtain a valid Oklahoma State Class "A" Commercial Driver License within six months of employment/promotion. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a valid Oklahoma State Class "A" Commercial Driver License within six months from the date of hire/promotion.
 
NOTE: The employee will be required to possess or obtain Master Mechanic certification within 24 months of employment/promotion. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining Master Mechanic certification within 24 months from the date of hire/promotion. 
WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Inside and outside exposed to heat, cold, humidity, and rain.
  • Possibility of falls from working on and around slippery surfaces.
  • Possibility of body injuries such as sprains, fractures, deep cuts, or loss of body members.
  • Will work from ladders, platforms, or other equipment from 4 to 12 feet above floor or ground level.
  • Will work in confined or cramped positions and be required to assume awkward or strained positions.
  • Will work near moving machinery and power tools.
  • Exposed to intermittent or continued loud and insistent noises caused by machinery and other workers.
  • Possibility of injury to the body caused by burns or electrical shock.
  • Frequent to sustained exposure to fumes and gasses i.e. carbon monoxide. May require wearing of self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Frequent exposure to noxious odors such as garbage truck, dead dog truck, septic tank cleaning trucks, sewage line cleaning trucks, etc.
  • Possibility of severe electrical shock causing temporary respiratory and circulatory disturbance.
  • Occasionally exposed to infections caused by microorganisms.
  • Will work one of three, eight-hour shifts, and may be required to work holidays and overtime.
  • Frequent local travel.
NOTE: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.
 
 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strength enough to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing 50 pounds such as machinery, parts, power tools, etc.
  • Stamina enough to exert oneself physically throughout the working day.
  • Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach out to reach automotive ports and equipment when performing repair tasks.
  • Mobility enough to continuously move oneself from place to place.
  • Extreme arm-hand steadiness, manual and finger dexterity enough to use manual and power tools in the repair and maintenance of automotive parts and equipment.
  • Near vision enough to read manuals, schematics, labels on parts boxes, etc., and to work on small parts and wires.
  • Visual color discrimination enough to accurately match color-coded wires, etc.
  • Ability to determine location of sound such as engine block, transmission, carburetor, etc.
  • Ability to discriminate among environmental sounds such as tappets pinging in a car, etc.
NOTE: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.
