Summary

We are looking for a Field Technician to join the City of Charleston's Stormwater Department! In this role, you will monitor stormwater systems, compile data for reporting, perform basic drafting and surveying, and ensure all work is done in in accordance with approved plans and departmental engineering standards.

Examples of Duties

• Evaluates maintenance per established standards; makes daily inspections of work in progress at worksites, and makes recommendations for schedule modifications.
• Interprets drawings, engineering details, schematic diagrams, and plats, conferring with management or staff to determine quality and reliability standards.
• Inspects service call sites and work areas to determine type of work required and compiles estimates of work, materials, and equipment required.
• Assists in field surveys and office drafting of engineering projects.
• Observes employees and contractors using tools and instruments to verify that equipment is being operated and maintained according to quality assurance standards.
• Evaluates data and writes regular inspection reports to validate or indicate deviations from existing standards.
• Recommends modifications to quality or production standards to achieve optimum quality within limits of equipment capability.
• Coordinates and compiles work performed for regulatory requirements of the Stormwater Program and Community Rating System Program.
• Maintains all equipment and tools in good working condition.
• Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
• Interprets policies and job orders to workers, assigning duties and enforcing safety regulations.
• Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
• Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, working conditions, efficiency, and quality of output.
• Maintains time and production records.
• Confers with supervisors to coordinate activities of the division.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Engineering, Construction Management or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Able to be trained in the operation of camera equipment and utilize the equipment properly and according to the training within 180 days of hire.
• Ability to obtain Certified Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Inspector Certification within 180 days of hire.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office or similar software.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with pole/crawler cameras for pipe inspection.
