The City of Charleston, SC is Hiring a Planner Near Charleston, SC

Summary

We are looking for a Planner to join the Department of Planning, Preservation & Sustainability! In this role, you will implement City planning principles and zoning ordinances, encompassing comprehensive plans and programs for utilization of land and physical facilities of the City and surrounding areas.

Examples of Duties

  • Implements comprehensive plans, City planning principles, and zoning ordinances, focusing on a particular aspect of the program, such as land use or resources. May coordinate the annexation process from initial contact with property owners to the adoption of annexation ordinance and subsequent zoning.
  • Compiles and analyzes data on economic, social, and physical factors affecting land use and prepares or requisitions graphic and narrative reports on data.
  • Confers with local authorities, civic leaders, social scientists, and land planning and development specialists to devise and recommend arrangements of land and physical facilities for residential, commercial, industrial, and community uses.
  • Recommends governmental measures affecting land use, public utilities, community facilities, and housing and transportation to control and guide community development and renewal.
  • Reviews and evaluates environmental impact reports applying to specified private and public planning projects and programs.
  • Analyzes zoning requests and determines applicable procedure(s) for review and approval.
  • Reads and understands land development plans.
  • Attends Planning Commission meetings and provides support and recommendations for boards and commissions.
  • Inspects development sites and investigates potential violations of zoning ordinances.
  • Responds to common inquiries or complaints from the public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • One year related professional experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) or equivalent in Planning or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to effectively present information.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, and similar software.
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Planning or a related field.
  • Experience in customer service, planning, and land use.
  • Experience with specialized software and systems to include ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and permit tracking systems such as Energov, GovQA, Boards , webpage management, and project management software.
