Job Overview
The Middle School Art Teacher will teach art classes to grades 4 – 7. This teacher will also serve as an advisor and member of a middle school homeroom team. This position necessitates a thorough understanding of middle school children as well as a desire to work with and advocate for them. They will be a talented and dynamic art teacher who will inspire in students a love and appreciation of art and instill technique through a variety of artforms in order for them to express themselves and take creative risks. This individual reports to the Head of Middle School and works closely with the Middle School Arts Department.
Chapin Middle School’s art teacher and advisor will be:
An art teacher who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development who
Teaches art classes in grades 4 -7
Works collaboratively with the Middle School Arts Team to develop and maintain a culture of openness, mutual respect, kindness, and inquiry in the art studio and within the Chapin Arts community
Creates and implements art curriculum for grades 4-7
Shares in the upkeep of the art studio and its material organization
Participates in department-wide initiatives concerning issues of equity, pedagogy, and curriculum
Attends all faculty and department meetings and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects
Participates in school-wide events and professional development
Supports homeroom team and students during morning duty, snack duty, etc.
A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history who
Understands and appreciates the Middle School learner within the context of pre-adolescent development
Demonstrates effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, skill levels,learning needs, and interests
An educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by
Developing, alongside students, a safe and productive learning environment, building trust with students through clear guidelines and expectations
Cultivating an inclusive classroom that promotes diverse points of view and constructive dialogue
Creates a supportive, compassionate advisory program which builds connections between advisee and their family
A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning who
Communicates and collaborates with departmental colleagues and homeroom teachers
Maintains open and professional communication with students, families, and colleagues
Develops, collaboratively, interdisciplinary units of study that allow students to draw meaningful connections across subjects
Participates in professional development rooted in current research in the field
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Art Education or related field
- At least 3 years teaching experience in teaching art with Middle School aged children (Grades 4-7)
- Experience teaching a range of artforms and media
- Advisory experience or equivalent
Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Art Education, Middle School education, or other related fields

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience. The range is $68,000-120,000.
