  • Guides the implementation of clinical policies and procedures which ensure safe, sanitary and efficient practices supporting professional nursing care standards.
  • Assures that documentation, medication administration, resident nursing care, safety and sanitation are executed property.

  • Must be able to communicate regarding the medical care plan and physician order information.
  • The charge nurse supports meeting all LTC residents’ needs by actively assisting (to the extent of cross training, certification, and designated procedures) in all tasks (nursing, activities, dining, and laundry) to meet identified needs.
  • Participates in planning, organizing, directing, and facilitating Long Term Care to nurture a holistic person-centered and resident directed culture.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Strengthen the ability of the house/neighborhood to grow as a separate effective home/neighborhood.
  • Promote individual and team learning in the house.
  • Fosters collaboration, consensus, and negotiation to address problem solving with an emphasis on resident, family or designated representative relationships and teamwork.
  • Strong communication skills are a must.
  • Frequent interruptions should be expected.
  • Must be able to pay attention to details while performing multiple tasks simultaneously for periods of 2 hours or longer.
  • Must report to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
  • Must show up to work regularly without excessive absences.
  • Wears identification while on duty.
  • Uses computerized punch system correctly.
  • Must have fluency in English for effective job performance. Must be able to speak clearly, distinctly and be understood by co-workers and customers. Bi-lingual is a plus but not necessary.
  • Handwriting must be legible and in standard specified format for general understanding by others.
  • Must have above average aptitude of Excel, Matrix Care and other key health information management systems.
  • Writing skills must include the ability to spell correctly and use proper grammar and punctuation. This includes both e-mail and formal letters.
  • Must be able to learn procedures within The Cedars established timeline and follow them accurately and consistently according to organizational standards.
  • Must be able to learn new duties and procedures and implement them into work habits within The Cedars specified timelines.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills with internal and external customers.
  • Must be able to hear and understand resident requests.
  • Must be able to read accurately and retain information that was read and apply it.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods (8 hours or more).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must possess, at a minimum, a current Nursing License in the State of Kansas from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in a hospital, long term care facility, or other related health care facility preferred.
  • Prefer training experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Flexibility to cover scheduled hours on short notice.
  • Skills at dealing with emotional situations.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Spanish bi-lingual capabilities are a plus.
  • Primary Duties
    This is what you will be expected to do on the daily basis in this role.

  • Oversees that the house is maintained in a safe, comfortable, welcoming and functional environment.
  • Assess each house for potential hazards.
  • Implement practices utilizing appropriate techniques regarding sanitation, infection control, fire and safety, disaster preparedness and emergency care.
  • Investigation and reporting all incidents and accidents.
  • Observing the team for safe work habits, customer service and addressing observations.
  • The charge nurse will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with The Cedars’ policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Included in the nursing function, is directing work and evaluation of all staff cross training in the House Nurses’ professional area is adequate to support quality outcomes with both residents and staff.
  • The charge nurse must be able to coach, educate, and discipline staff that are working under your license with care and professionalism.
  • Need to always be professional, kind and caring in your demeanor.
  • Able to delegate tasks effectively and efficiently with gentleness and respect for others in their roles.
  • Able to handle problems and disputes calmly and effectively in a professional manner.
  • Ensure all staff in your assigned houses are held accountable for their job duties, along with following policy and procedures set by The Cedars and enforced by the DON/ADON.
  • Must comply will all federal and state regulatory requirements to maintain certification and active registry as job duties require.
  • Develop and/or update care plans in response to resident needs and providing the resident/DPOA/family attendees updated information related to nursing changes.
  • Assist with staff education.
  • Assisting in admission of new patients, bathing and feeding, making beds, helping patients into and out of bed, and collecting specimens.
  • Administers specified medication.
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes geriatric patients and the general patient population.
  • Collects current symptoms, as well as detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with clinical nursing team members to assess plan, implement and evaluate resident care plans.
  • Performs resident care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for resident’s age.
  • Coordinates and supervises resident care as necessary.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible and organized.
  • Ability to function well under stressful situations.
  • Acts with integrity, treats residents and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Holds self and others accountable; admits mistakes and learns from them.
  • Interacts professionally with resident/family and involves resident/family in resident teaching and plan of care upon transfer or discharge from the business unit.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the business unit and with other business units.
  • Assists the supervisor and clinical nurse leadership team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of QI indicators to improve resident outcome and work environment.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of residents and family.
  • Demonstrates competency in the management of assaultive residents and application of restraints.
  • Reports any suspected abuse to appropriate nurse leader for handling.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state federal and CMS regulations.
  • Always maintains and ensures resident confidentiality.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, nurse and med aides and others that work in the business unit and/or across the organization.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, and infection control.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates and exhibits the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Knowledgeable of Infection Prevention and Control practices and procedures as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing nursing functions in the post-acute care facility.
  • Serve as a support person to the DON/ADON.

    Supervisory Responsibility
    This position has no direct administrative supervisory responsibilities other than duties as charge nurse.

    This job operates in a nursing home/healthcare setting. This role routinely requires the operation of office equipment, such as a computer, photocopier, fax machine. This role routinely requires the operation of medical equipment such as lifts, wheelchairs, and scales.
